The United States is reviving the no-green card rule for those who use public benefits

Miami: The Trump administration is reviving a rule that could deny green cards to immigrants who use public benefits that can include food stamps, Medicaid, housing vouchers and others.

The policy, known as “public charge,” appeared Thursday in the Federal Register and will be officially published on July 20.The policy was implemented in February 2020 as one of President Trump’s moves to limit legal immigration during his first administration, but was rolled back under President Biden. Under this policy, applicants for green cards must prove that they will not pose a burden on the country or become “public charges.” Its return comes when the Trump administration implements a policy to reduce illegal and legal immigration, and when the cost of health care and food rises.
