After fans waited more than three hours for the finale of Jay-Z’s three-night stand at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, the rapper addressed the major delay early in the show, telling attendees that there were thousands of people outside and that the show had been pushed back to avoid crowd safety issues.
“Let me explain the delay to you guys,” Jay said after the show finally started just after midnight Eastern Monday. “It was like 10,000 people outside, and we locked all the doors, and someone rushed in the door. They locked the door for your safety and everyone’s safety outside. There’s 10,000 people outside; I don’t want to start music and get people run over. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was okay. I appreciate your patience.”
The delay marked a rocky start to what was the most anticipated of Jay-Z’s historic three-night stand at Yankee Stadium. Fans have been eagerly awaiting what the hip-hop icon has in store after already bringing out Beyoncé, Nas and Alicia Keys during the first night and Eminem on the second.
Concerts have been a bit rare for Jay-Z since wrapping up his 4:44 Tour in 2017. The Yankee Stadium shows are a full-circle moment for him, celebrating the 30th anniversary of his groundbreaking album. Reasonable doubt And the twenty-fifth anniversary of Scheme. This third night show, which he calls the walk-in show, has already featured Teyana Taylor and Usher.
While the Yankee Stadium concerts have the added meaning of being held in his hometown, Jay will also be performing in London, Paris and Los Angeles in the coming months. He’s also the subject of a documentary series directed by Rick Rubin that’s scheduled to hit HBO this fall.
