Eyewitnesses said that nearby boats rushed to the scene and began rescuing passengers from the water before the Border Guard, Navy, Coast Guard and other emergency teams joined the operation. Reports stated that rescue efforts were hampered as many passengers remained trapped inside the capsized ship.

A government official said that the authorities are still working to determine the exact number of survivors, according to an official media report carried by Agence France-Presse. He added that initial assessments indicate that the speedboat may have capsized due to strong winds and high waves.
