Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national delegate Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday intensified his opposition to the rollout of E20 gasoline (20 per cent blended with ethanol), announcing that he had written to 29 car manufacturers over concerns related to the use of E20 fuel in older vehicles.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the AAP leader mentioned that he is writing formal letters to automobile manufacturers in India, seeking clarification on the impact of E20 fuel on vehicles manufactured before 2023.

“Today, I am writing letters to all car manufacturers in the country – they must inform the public whether E20 can be used in the products they manufacture before 2023. If yes, then in case of mileage problems or damage to any component, will the company compensate for the loss?” books.

In a later post on X, Kejriwal shared the letters and wrote: “Today, I wrote letters to 29 car manufacturers in the country. The first letter was written to three companies: Maruti Suzuki India,
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Hero MotoCorp. The second letter was written to the remaining 26 companies.”
“I asked them two questions”: Kejriwal
Addressing a press conference in Delhi, AAP leader Kejriwal said he had written letters to 29 car manufacturers.
“Today I have written to 29 automobile manufacturers. I have sent separate letters to three companies, Maruti, Toyota and Hero, which stated in a government press conference that E-20 fuel will not cause any problem in older vehicles. I have directed these three companies to specify in their owners manuals that older vehicles should not use fuel with ethanol content higher than E-10,” Kejriwal said.
In addition, he said he asked the companies two questions.
“So, I asked them two questions: If the use of E-20 reduces mileage by more than five percent or causes damage to any component, will compensation be provided? They should inform the public whether E20 can be used in cars they manufacture before 2023. If yes, then in case of mileage problems or damage to any component, will the company compensate for the loss?” Kejriwal asked.

‘It’s a distortion’: Union Minister Puri
Earlier on Monday, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said reports of customer problems with E20 fuel are a “misrepresentation”. He also dismissed the controversy over gasoline blended with 20 percent ethanol, and said that car manufacturers and consumers had accepted the fuel.
The minister also confirmed that the transition to a higher blend of E25 will not happen until after tests are completed and discussed with automakers.
“The car manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest?” He said.
The minister noted, “This is a distortion, and I do not want to use stronger words.”
“We’ve been using E15 for the last three and a half years. We’ve been on E20 since April of last year. And from April 2025 to April 2026, it’s already been one year, and we’re now another five months into that,” he said.
“Automakers are comfortable with E20. Every one of them has made a statement to that effect. Consumers also appreciate the product,” he added.
