More rain and thunderstorms are expected in Delhi on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert, indicating possible weather-related disturbances, even as the maximum temperature is likely to remain between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature is expected to rise to 38 degrees Celsius by Saturday and remain in this range until Tuesday. The temperature on Monday rose to 38.6 degrees Celsius, the highest in July in two years, since 39.3 degrees Celsius on July 30, 2024. The minimum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday was the highest in July in two years, since 30.4 degrees Celsius on July 31, 2024.
Parts of Delhi received light rain late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, the IMD said. From 11:30 pm (Tuesday) to 8:30 pm (Wednesday), Mayur Vihar recorded 4 mm rainfall, Javarpur 2.5 mm, Pusa 2 mm, Chhatarpur 1.5 mm and Palam 1.3 mm. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, and Pitampura recorded 1 mm rainfall during the same period.
Light to light and moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely on Wednesday afternoon, the IMD said. Another wave is expected in the afternoon or evening. A third wave of light to light rain is possible on Wednesday night.
The Meteorological Department forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms on Thursday, and light to light rain on Friday and Saturday. It issued a yellow alert for all parts of Delhi at 9:45 am on Wednesday, indicating light to moderate rain and gusty winds of 30-40 km per hour.
A low pressure system and western disturbances brought the first spell of heavy rain this season to Delhi and the National Capital Region on Tuesday, flooding parts of the capital and Gurugram and closing the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
In an advisory issued around 10 pm, Gurugram Police urged companies to allow employees to work from home amid the adverse weather conditions. Earlier, a road collapsed and caused traffic disruption in the Hurghada area. Heavy traffic was reported on roads connecting Delhi and Noida even as it rained due to higher than normal temperatures.
