In Mumbai, the BMC said it would conduct a scientific study to determine the underlying causes of trees falling during the monsoon, including whether road concrete weakens tree roots. The city recorded at least three deaths, including an 11-year-old school student, in tree-falling accidents over the past week.

The civic body also said it would start annual inspections, maintenance and mapping of manholes from January to improve preparedness ahead of the monsoon, PTI reported.

In Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst was reported on Tuesday. Although no casualties were reported, one or two canals and bridges built over a local drain were washed away in the floods caused by the cloudburst, according to sources, news agency PTI reported.

Meanwhile, rains continued to disrupt normal life in Delhi and Gurugram, with severe waterlogging and huge traffic jams reported across the National Capital Region on Tuesday. The authorities took extensive measures to restore normal life.

The main carriageway of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48) near Narsinghpur collapsed due to heavy rain, leading to the closure of two lanes, the agency said.

El Nino may not affect rainfall

The country’s rainfall deficit has narrowed to 12 per cent, with the first week of July witnessing above-normal monsoon activity, the Center said on Tuesday. She also stressed that an El Niño year does not necessarily result in less than normal rainfall, PTI reported.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a high-level review meeting was held under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister PK Mishra to take stock of the progress made in the kharif season and review preparedness measures in view of the potential impact of El Niño on various sectors of the economy.

Today’s Weather Live: Heavy rains in Gurugram on Tuesday afternoon led to severe traffic jams and waterlogging across major highways and main roads.

Slow movement of vehicles was reported from Sarehole towards Delhi, while the Dwarka Expressway Cloverleaf intersection witnessed heavy traffic, slowing down the traffic flow significantly.

Traffic congestion was also reported on several other major roads across Gurugram.

Long queues of vehicles were seen on NH-48 near Hero Honda Chowk, Manesar-Delhi stretch, especially near IFFCO Chowk and Sikanderpur, where sluggish traffic led to major delays during peak hours.
