The workers were working on a tunnel road project linking Malappuram and Wayanad districts, according to officials involved in the rescue mission. “It is an unfortunate accident. Rescue efforts are continuing,” Sathisan said while speaking to reporters.
Red alert in Wayanad after heavy rains
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Wayanad, with heavy rainfall recorded in Mananthavadi and Vythiri districts of the district. The landslide hit the Kalladi Tunnel Project site in Wayanad at around 11 am on Tuesday, following which a red alert was issued at 12.30 pm. A red alert has also been issued for neighboring Kozhikode district, with orange alerts for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod.
A red alert means very heavy rainfall of more than 204mm in 24 hours, an orange alert means very heavy rainfall between 115mm and 204mm, and a yellow alert means very heavy rainfall between 64mm to 115mm.
Residents were evacuated, and the minister described it as a “man-made” disaster.
Rescue operations are underway at the landslide site, with the participation of teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and rescue services, police, forest department staff and local residents.
The district administration began evacuating residents living near the disaster site as heavy rains continued. Families residing in a nearby colony were shifted from the area, news agency PTI reported.
Kerala Agriculture Minister T Siddique described the disaster as “man-made”, saying it was the result of “unscientific dumping” linked to the ongoing tunnel project.
“It is a disaster committed by unscientific dumping of soil and clay as part of the tunnel project. There were indications of such acts and they were raised in meetings of Konkan officials. But no corrective steps seem to have been taken,” Siddique said, adding that six people have been hospitalized so far.
