The first reviews for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic “The Odyssey” are here and they’ve caused a huge buzz online. Amid much chatter and controversy, critics and industry insiders have described the film as a “huge” achievement for the director and also one of his “finest achievements”.As the film prepares for release on July 17, the team, led by Nolan, has been promoting the film around the world on an elaborate press tour. On Monday, the director and his crew stopped in London for the film’s premiere and will follow it with premieres in Paris, Mumbai, New York, Beijing and Seoul.Following early screenings, social media was filled with glowing reviews, with many hailing the adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey as a cinematic triumph.
Many early viewers were unanimous in their praise of Nolan’s ambitious vision, calling the film “monumental” and “flawless filmmaking.”One early reaction read: “The Odyssey is massive. This is Nolan operating on a unique, accelerating level. The amazing cast, practical effects and massive scale come together to create a twist on Homer’s epic that might surprise people. A beautiful cinematic achievement, and a true masterpiece.”
Another reviewer described the film as a “festival of filmmaking”, writing: “The Odyssey is a feast of filmmaking. A brilliant, thrilling presentation of Homer’s epic, with a uniquely Christopher Nolan feel.”A separate reaction described the film as an “absolute triumph”, saying: “The Odyssey is phenomenal: Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, called a film of flawless filmmaking, is an absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.
Amazing, bold, and perfect.”Others praised Nolan’s emotional narrative along with the film’s ambitious scope. One reviewer wrote, “Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a blockbuster on so many levels. Yes, it really does try to condense almost all of Homer into three hours. But it also addresses, with more heart than any Nolan film since Interstellar, his greatest muse. . . .”One critic noted the film’s contemporary relevance, writing, “The Odyssey is truly a stunning film! Poignant, brilliant, and epic, but more than anything else, it has real resonance for our time and age.”
Nolan’s film truly captures how timeless the tale is and how much it deserves to be revisited; How strong is the commentary on it today.”

Matt Damon , Robert Pattinson The ensemble cast received praise
While Nolan’s direction has dominated conversations, the film’s cast has also received widespread praise. Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, has emerged as one of the biggest cameos. One reviewer wrote: “Matt Damon absolutely owns the role of Odysseus. You feel every loss, every mistake, and every victory with him. Anne Hathaway is fantastic as Penelope, and Tom Holland surprised me in the best way. He proves he can be so much more than Spider-Man.”Another reaction praised the emotional depth of the performance, saying: “Matt Damon’s on-screen command and insight into the spirit of Odysseus brings waves of immense power to a larger-than-life, complex role. Anne Hathaway delivers an equally emotional and powerful performance as the resilient Penelope. Tom Holland’s portrayal of Telemachus coming of age signals an exciting new era in his evolving career as a leading man.”
The cast is huge but the supporting roles of Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton and John Leguizamo impressed me the most.Robert Pattinson, in particular, became a fan favorite after early screenings. “The cast is packed, and somehow everyone still gets a chance to shine. Anne Hathaway is amazing, Matt Damon is excellent, and Tom Holland continues to prove he can do just about anything. But Robert Pattinson absolutely stole the show for me.”
He is extremely conniving, manipulative and endlessly entertaining to watch. Pattinson tends to delve into the character of a villain, resulting in one of his favorite performances.
Look, it’s the must-see cinematic event of the summer, and probably all year long. I can’t wait to watch it again,” one viewer posted.Another called the performances “truly great” and wrote, “A triumphant, awe-inspiring epic. The performances by Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o are truly magnificent. And for some, truly the best performances of their careers!”
Critics praised the IMAX visuals, score, and surprising horror elements
Beyond the performances, reviewers also praised Nolan’s large-scale filmmaking, noting that his use of IMAX cameras elevates the experience.
Early reaction also praised the film’s visual scale, storytelling, score and practical effects, with many critics describing The Odyssey as a “modern masterpiece”.Some viewers were particularly surprised by the film’s dark tone. One reaction read: “What really struck me was how much he embraced horror. Some of the film’s biggest moments are truly unsettling, adding a whole new dimension to his filmmaking while never losing sight of the humanity at the heart of the story.”Another reviewer highlighted the film’s appeal to mythology fans, writing: “If you like Greek mythology, sword fights, monsters, gods, emotional stories, and movies that really make you think, this is everything you could want. Not only has Nolan created another blockbuster, he’s delivered an adventure that feels timeless.”The technical prowess also received unanimous praise. One reviewer wrote: “Cinematographer Hoyt van Hoytema shoots perfectly, and the craftsmanship – the costumes, sound, editing and Ludwig Göransson’s music – is an exceptional and very profound art. The battle scenes, especially at Troy, are breathtaking. It is an incredible epic.”
