Modi’s reference to the popular meme, which was originally a dialogue in Panchayat web threads, came as part of a banter with CG Power and Industrial Solutions chairman Vellayan Subbiah. He used some Gujarati sayings in his speech on the occasion, news agency PTI reported.

“The government’s vision for development is clear, and now it is up to the industry to follow it. ‘Nishan chowk maaf, paan nahi maaf nisho nishan’ (Missing a high target is forgivable, but setting a low target is not). We certainly don’t want to set our sights low, sir,” he was quoted as saying, adding that he has started learning the Gujarati language.

“Our first shipment of semiconductor chips will go to our partners in Japan. With this, India has become part of the global semiconductor supply chain. As people in Gujarat say, ‘Kam bole che’ (action speaks). Today, this first shipment speaks louder than words,” Subbiah added.

In response, Modi in his speech referred to the two Gujarati proverbs.

“Subiah ji used a Gujarati proverb, ‘Nishan chowk maaf, ban nahi maaf nitchu nishan’. I never have small goals, I never think small goals. If I have to make a statue, I will make it the tallest statue in the world,” the Prime Minister said, in an apparent reference to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue of Unity.

“Subiah ji also used the phrase ‘Kam bole che’… ‘Sun rahe ho na Vinod’ (Are you listening to Vinod), kam bole che,” Modi said, highlighting the work done by his government to create a domestic semiconductor industry.

The audience and those on stage burst into laughter.

On Saturday, Modi launched commercial production at a semiconductor facility in Gujarat, and said he was confident that the facility would achieve its production target soon.

“I have been told that 200 million chips will be produced here every year from now on. I am very confident that you will achieve it soon. This confidence also stems from the fact that Semicon India’s program is gaining momentum. Step by step, pod by pod, and now wafer by wafer. We have set a target to manufacture 500 million chips per year. I am confident that you will achieve this target very soon. My heartfelt congratulations to everyone. Our team at CG “Semi”.
