Tom Hanks’ next baseball movie is ready to go.
Sony Pictures announced on Wednesday that it is set for release The return It will be released theatrically on July 30, 2027. Hanks stars in the film, directed by Marielle Heller from her own script, which adapts Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name.
The return Hanks plays a pitching coach whose life is dramatically changed after he suffers a hit to the head while standing on the mound.
Playtone and Leah Holzer are producing the project in collaboration with Major League Baseball.
The return It’s scheduled to hit theaters in late July, which falls after the typical halfway point of the MLB season as the pennant races continue to heat up.
Hanks already has one classic baseball movie under his belt, having starred alongside Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell in the 1992 cult hit. A league of their own. Heller most recently directed Amy Adams in 2024 Bitch. Her other directing credits include Diary of a teenage girl, Can you forgive me? and Beautiful day in the neighborhoodwith the latter starring Hanks in the role of the late Fred Rogers.
