Zahran Mamdani said he does not want to change the US Constitution so he can run for president.
New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani caused a sensation after three candidates supported by him won the elections over two incumbent candidates and a third candidate supported by the party establishment. But his rise on the American political scene will not give him the greatest opportunity, which is to run for president, because he was not born in the United States.
During an interview on Sunday, ABC News’ Jonathan Karl indicated that Mamdani will soon meet the Constitution’s age requirement to run for president. But Karl pointed out that Mamdani would not be eligible to run given his hometown. When asked if the requirements should be changed, Mamdani laughed and said, “I think the Constitution looks good as it is now,” during a Sunday appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”“Just the way it is. I’m very excited to focus on New York City.
But thank you for reminding me of my upcoming deaths,” Mamdani said as Karl reminded him that he would be 35 years old.He asked Carl Mamdani what he thought about whether a democratic socialist could be elected president. “I think a democratic socialist can be elected anywhere across this country to any office. What I think we need to focus on is focusing on the working class,” Mamdani said.“And this is the direction the party should take with regard to selecting a candidate for 2028?” he asked. Carl asked.
“I think the direction the party needs to go is how best to fight for the working class. I think we need a platform and a vision that doesn’t look like it’s been cooked up by consultants, but instead, a vision that you can say in response to someone asking, why can’t I afford rent, why can’t I afford groceries, why can’t I afford child care? We need to be clear about who we represent, how we’re going to advocate for them, and that we’re actually willing to fight for them when things get tough,” Mamdani said.
What are the requirements to run for the US presidency? Why can Zahran Mamdani never compete?
- To run for president of the United States, the Constitution establishes three formal requirements.
- Be a US citizen by birth (not naturalized later in life).
- You must be at least 35 years old.
