In a setback for the Shiv Sena (UBT), former MLA Sachin Ahir on Tuesday joined the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Ahir, a former MLA from Worli and a close confidant of Aaditya Thackeray, has also filed his nomination for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Confirming this development, Shrikant Shinde said that Ahir has officially joined the Shiv Sena and has been handed over the nomination form for the vice-president election.
Ahir began his political career with the Indian National Congress before moving to the Nationalist Congress Party. He later joined the undivided Shiv Sena after Aaditya Thackeray entered electoral politics from Worli, a move seen as helping the young leader secure a safer constituency.
Latest challenges for Uddhav camp
Ahir’s shift comes amid ongoing unrest in the Uddhav Thackeray camp four years after the Shiv Sena’s 2022 split that saw Shinde walk out with a majority of the party’s MLAs and later the party’s name and symbol.
The move also comes in the wake of the defection of six Lok Sabha MPs from the Sena (UBT) last week to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, a development that has strengthened Shinde’s position within the ruling Mahayoti alliance.
The six MPs had officially merged with Shinde’s faction after days of speculation, with the deputy prime minister describing the shift as the “second phase” of the 2022 rebellion.
