The feature is being offered in phases, which means it may not be available to all users right away.

The platform said that it will notify users through the application as soon as the feature is available in their country.

Step by step guide to reserve WhatsApp username

If the feature is available in your account, follow these steps:

  1. > Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Open > WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  3. Click > Account.
  4. Choose > Username.
  5. Choose and reserve your preferred username.

If your preferred username is already taken, WhatsApp will suggest alternative unique usernames through the built-in username generator.

Rollout in phases

WhatsApp said that user names will be released gradually over the coming months. As a result, not everyone will see the option right away, even after updating the app.

The company said that users will receive an in-app notification when the feature becomes available in their country.

Why does WhatsApp provide usernames?

This feature is designed to improve privacy by allowing users to call without sharing their phone numbers.

Once you enable usernames, people who message you for the first time will see your username instead of your phone number. To contact someone, users will need to know their exact username, as WhatsApp will not have a searchable username directory or public suggestions.

The company also offers an optional username key that users can share to further control who can message them.

Existing Instagram and Facebook usernames can be reserved

WhatsApp said eligible users can reserve the same username they use on Instagram or Facebook, allowing them to maintain a consistent identity across Meta platforms. The platform has also made it clear that usernames are completely optional. Users who prefer to share their phone numbers can continue to use the app as they do now.
