The first message that turned “Minnal Murali” director Basil Joseph from programming and deadlines to cinema
Years ago, in the busy world of IT, a young software engineer named Basil Joseph was quietly dreaming of something much bigger than code and deadlines – cinema!Little did he know that his life was about to take a cinematic turn worthy of a blockbuster hit.Basil was working in a programming role at a famous company where his daily routine revolved around programming and deadlines. Despite the structured corporate life, his interest in filmmaking continued to grow in the background.
A Short film Which opened the first door
Basil created a short film called ‘Priyamvadha Katharayano’ during this period and shared it online, tagging director Vineeth Sreenivasan, whom he was a huge fan of.As Basil Joseph revealed in an interview with Sujeeth Bhakthan, Vineeth did not notice the video initially. However, he eventually reached out to actor Aju Varghese, who he came across while browsing Facebook. Agu admired the work, and responded positively to it.
“It’s great,” he said. This small reaction became the first step in a chain of events that would later change Bassil’s career.
Chain reaction
After watching the short film himself, Aju Varghese encouraged Vineeth Srinivasan to take a look. Vineeth later saw the project and appreciated Basil’s efforts. When Basil expressed interest in working as an assistant director, Vineeth responded cautiously. “Let’s see, I’m not doing any new films at the moment,” he said.
At that point, there was no immediate opportunity, but the connection was made.
Eight months of waiting
Basil returned to his routine job while continuing to hold on to his dream of making films. Several months passed without any clear direction. Then, one ordinary day, he received a message on Facebook Messenger from Vineeth Sreenivasan. It said: “Are you still interested in helping me?” Basil later described this moment as a defining moment in his life, calling it “the most life-changing message of my life.”
First meeting
What followed was pure magic. Meeting in Chennai. Vineeth arrived casually at three-quarters and i20. Basil and his friends appeared wearing turbans, taking biryani and fried lamb from a place on the beach. They talked about movies, dreams, and possibilities. And so, from June onwards, Vineeth said the words Basil had been waiting for: “Join me. We’re starting a film.”With this one message and that word – “Join me” – I opened the door for Basil Joseph to the wide world of cinema.Basil Joseph’s professional turning point makes us understand that: “Sometimes the smallest message becomes the biggest turning point in life.”
