Renny Harlin has returned to Malta. The veteran director arrived on the island last week to attend the Mediterranean Film Festival, which screened his latest film, the shark thriller. Deep waterStarring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley. But his action movie was in 1995 Cutter Island Which originally brought the Finnish author to Malta, which has hosted many blockbuster Hollywood productions, including Gladiator and Jurassic Park Privileges.
And he was excited to be back. “Malta is the best kept secret,” Harlin said. Collider Steven Weintraub during a fascinating talk about directing held inside the Festival Center in Valletta last week. “People don’t realize how amazing this place is.”
The duo covered Harlin’s career from start to finish, and ended their conversation with a look ahead to Harlin’s next release, The monsterstarring Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman, is scheduled for release in October. Written by Umair Aleem, the film depicts Jackson as an American president who becomes trapped inside his heavily armored presidential limousine, also known as “The Beast,” during a coordinated coup by a hostile militia. In order to survive, the President must uncover the vehicle’s top-secret attack capabilities and fight his way back to safety and his country.

“It’s a really extraordinary movie and a very cool script,” Harlen told Weintraub and a crowd, adding that the film opens with “the biggest action scene I’ve ever seen” right as the lights hit the screen. “[The audience realizes] We are at a global summit, like a G7 meeting with all the world leaders, and there was a huge terrorist attack. It wasn’t made clear who the terrorists were, their nationality, or anything like that, but there was an attempt on several presidents’ lives. They must get Sam Jackson into the monster, his safe, bulletproof and explosion-proof car, and get him out of there before he is killed. And one thing leads to another.”
The film marks the fourth collaboration between Harlen and Jackson, who previously worked together in 1996 Long kiss goodnight1999 Deep blue sea And 2007 cleaner. in The monsterJackson’s character is joined by a “badly injured” Secret Service agent, played by Kinnaman. “It’s the story of these two guys in a car trying to survive, and I dare say it’s a very exciting film, a very action-packed film and a very unusual film that has a very beautiful, happy ending,” the director said.
He also hopes to provide a nice boost to Kinnaman’s career. “I’d like to think this movie is really going to make Joel’s career,” Harlin said of the veteran actor whose long list of credits includes “The Movie.” For All Mankind, Silent Night, House of Cards, Altered Carbon, Suicide Squad, Hanna And the last Incomplete women. “People will be surprised when they see his performance.”
They may have had a similar reaction to seeing Beast’s unique vehicle, which Harleen clearly enjoyed trying out.
“It is indestructible,” he explained. “No matter what missiles they send their way, they can’t destroy the car. They just keep going, and then you have some weapons that we’ll never know about.” [about]. I don’t think anyone can prove whether or not he has these weapons, but he does. …The President has never done anything but smoke a cigar in the back of a car, so he doesn’t know how any of that stuff works. There are all the computer boards and weapons and things that he’s trying to figure out how to work and he can’t contact headquarters and he’s alone there, so it becomes this amazing survival story. This is my fourth film with Sam, and the relationship between him and Joel Kinnaman is exceptional.
