Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Prince Harry is reconsidering plans to bring Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the UK next month after British authorities rejected a request for taxpayer-funded police protection, according to media reports. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expected to make their first family trip to Britain in four years, as the visit is linked to events marking the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, the proposed visit is now under review following the recent security setback.
The security decision throws travel plans into uncertainty
Sources quoted by British media said that Harry’s team was informed on Friday that publicly funded police security would not be provided outside the royal residences during the family’s stay. While police protection will be available when staying at one of the royal properties as guests of King Charles, the Duke will have to rely on his own security team accompanying him from California.A UK Government spokesman said the country’s protective security arrangements remained “strict and proportionate” but declined to comment on individual cases.
Harry is still keen to complete the visit
Reports indicate that the Duke of Sussex is deeply upset by the decision but remains determined to explore options that might allow the trip to continue safely.
The family was expected to spend about five days in Britain, and Meghan is scheduled to accompany Harry to several public events in London and the Midlands. Harry was also scheduled to visit the charities he continues to support in the UK.
The possibility of a reunion with King Charles is in danger
The uncertainty surrounding the trip could also impact a potential reunion between King Charles III and his young grandchildren.Archie and Lilibet have not seen their grandfather in person since Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee celebrations in 2022.
Harry has reportedly told friends that he is looking forward to his children reconnecting with the royal during the visit.Although Buckingham Palace has not confirmed whether a family meeting is scheduled, recent interactions between Harry and Charles have fueled speculation of improved relations.
The long-term security conflict continues
The latest development comes more than a year after Harry lost a legal challenge against the Home Office over his right to automatic police protection during his visit to Britain.Following this ruling, Harry publicly stated that he did not believe it was safe to bring Meghan and their children to the UK without adequate security arrangements. His team was awaiting the outcome of a new security review by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), the body responsible for setting protection levels for senior royals and other high-profile individuals.
Signs of thaw in property relations
Harry last met King Charles in September during a private meeting at Clarence House, their first face-to-face meeting since early 2024.Observers viewed the meeting as an initial step towards mending strained relations following Duke Speer’s memoirs and a series of high-profile interviews critical of the royal family.Currently, a final decision on whether Meghan, Archie and Lilibet will travel to Britain is expected in the coming days.
