Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, during his visit to Seychelles from June 27-29. Modi will make a two-day trip to Seychelles at the invitation of President Patrick Herminie to participate in the country’s National Day Golden Jubilee celebrations as a guest of honour.

He will also visit the National Botanical Gardens in Seychelles, where he will also plant a tree.

He has lived on the grounds of the Governor’s Palace on St. Helena since 1882, when he arrived as a gift to the South Atlantic island, according to The Guardian.
Guinness World Records has listed him as an “icon,” and despite his advanced age, experts say he is in good shape and has a healthy appetite. However, he lost his sense of smell due to old age.
Research is currently being conducted on Jonathan’s DNA, as his cells do not appear to mutate as human cells do, according to Guinness World Records.

Reports of his death recently spread on social media, but Guinness World Records said he “happily spends his days with three other turtles in the gardens of the governor’s residence.”
Bilateral relations should be strengthened
Seychelles Foreign Minister Barry Faure said on Saturday that Modi’s visit is expected to further boost the tourism sector, with the potential signing of several agreements in areas including maritime security, space cooperation, cybersecurity and mutual legal assistance.

“Several agreements are expected to be signed, covering not only maritime security, but also emerging areas such as space cooperation, cybersecurity and mutual legal assistance,” the Seychelles Foreign Minister was quoted as saying.
In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said that Seychelles is a valued maritime neighbor and a key partner in the “MAHASAGAR Vision” and India’s shared commitment to the Global South.
Modi also said he looked forward to bilateral discussions aimed at further strengthening the enduring friendship.
“Together, we will work to advance the progress of our peoples and enhance security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region,” he said.
