Kunal Kemmu on camps in Bollywood: ‘It exists, but unfortunately, this is the way to go’
Kunal Kemmu made his reality show debut with ‘Alliance’, and in a candid conversation ahead of the show’s launch, he drew striking parallels between the on-screen game of alliances and the real ones that make up a career in Bollywood.
Let’s take a look at what he has to say.
Kunal Kemmu on why alliances are an essential component of human existence
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kunal Kemmu explained the concept behind ‘Alliance’ and why it resonates beyond just a reality show format. “There is a family you are born into, and there is a family you make or choose, like friends who become like family,” he said. “And sometimes family relationships don’t last. Human existence depends on alliances. In the past, if you couldn’t be a hunter or gatherer, you had to make alliances in order to survive.”
“Alliances are what you need to survive,” he said.
Kunal Kemmu admits to the camps in Bollywood
When the conversation turned to the well-known presence of camps and collectivism in Indian cinema, Kimmu was not shy about addressing the matter directly.“It’s there. It’s not the only way things happen, but it happens in any field. You may feel good or bad about it, but the truth is it will stay. It’s human nature. If I love someone and want to work with them, you can’t make me not work with them,” the actor said.
“It might be inappropriate for someone else, but unfortunately, that’s the way we have to go.”
Talent vs business mathematics in bollywood
In the same conversation, Kunal Kemmu also spoke about how the film industry has evolved and continues to prioritize factors beyond pure talent.“Camps hote the, ab thode kam hain because tab kuch hi for families thi jo movies banna rahi thi (There were camps. Now there are fewer because earlier there were only a few families who produced films),” he shared.
Companies came. But even today, businesses aren’t always defined by talent. “It’s determined by some mathematics, and it doesn’t make any sense.”He added, “This is why we started producing projects and not films. Fortunately, time teaches us everything. Now people will not watch films. They are telling us that they need content, not projects.”
