Ricky Gervais premieres ‘Alley Cats’ animation at Annecy Masterclass: ‘I could make this forever’

Ricky Gervais really loves being a cat.

“I don’t have to do my hair and makeup, I don’t have to get up early,” Gervais says of his role as the chubby, foul-mouthed Gus in his new Netflix animated series. Alley cats. “Cats never get old. So, as I get older and fatter, I can still sit in a chair and keep doing this forever.”

Gervais presented the first two 15-minute episodes Alley cats to the Annecy audience on Thursday and discussed the making of the show in a one-hour class. He was greeted with thunderous applause and a spontaneous chorus of “Happy Birthday” (Gervais turns 65 today).

Gervais and the actors recorded all of the series’ dialogue before filming a single frame of animation. The actors were recorded together in the same room, which is not a typical practice for animation, so they could improve lines and bounce ideas off each other.

“I told them, ‘Don’t do cartoon voices. Talk like you normally do,'” Gervais said, explaining the naturalism of the series. “I wanted everything to be realistic, except for the fact that the cats talk.”

Gervais’ trademark style seems to have survived the transfer from man to cat. The series combines dirty insults with more emotional story lines.
