Former bureaucrat Sujata Pandian, 50, on Thursday joined the opposition Biju Janata Dal in Odisha, despite party chief Naveen Patnaik confirming that he will lead the party in the upcoming elections. Sujata Pandian, wife of Patnaik’s close aide VK Pandian, was inaugurated amid speculation about her political and post-BJD Patnaik future.

The BJP is facing succession issues and a series of defections after losing power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2024, prompting VK Pandian to quit politics. Sujata Pandian’s inclusion is expected to boost perceptions that she is qualified for a bigger role in the BJD. She also voluntarily retired, like her husband, to enter politics. The BJP’s ‘Odia Asmita (pride)’ campaign highlighted VK Pandian’s non-Odia background.
Patnaik tried to play down speculations about Sujata Pandian’s role when he addressed her by her first Odia title, Rut. “She will join as a junior member. … She was an IAS [Indian Administrative Service] An officer, she held important positions, including her last position, where she took care of many women. Over time, you will get used to a new position and learn how to help people, especially women. “I would like to reiterate that I will lead the BJP in the upcoming elections,” Patnaik said.
Sujata Pandian said she returned to public service under Patnaik’s leadership. “I have previously served the people of Odisha under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik for 24 years. By joining BJP, I once again get an opportunity to serve them. I will work for the state with the blessings of Lord Jagannath and hundreds of thousands of BJP workers,” he said.
As an IAS officer of the 2000 batch, she oversaw the growth of women’s self-help groups, increased access to credit and the provision of interest-free loans to women entrepreneurs. It was associated with the Millet Shakti Initiative, which linked women’s groups with millet-based institutions and cafes.
The absence of BJP leaders like Raja Swain, Prasanna Acharya, Badri Batra and Bhupinder Singh from the inauguration gave credence to growing concern in the party about the influence of the Pandian family.
The BJP is trying to reinvent itself after losing power. The appointment of Sujata Pandian could revitalize a section of the cadre that remains loyal to Patnaik and VK Pandian. Her joining may alienate voters and leaders who have cited VK Pandian’s fame as one of the reasons behind the party’s electoral setback.
Many in the BJD hold VK Pandian responsible for the 2024 defeat. “He has become the dominant face of the government and hence the party’s election campaign,” said a former BJP parliamentarian. “During the 2024 elections, Pandian often overshadowed many of our ministers and legislators, creating a perception that power had shifted away from elected representatives.”
This perception contributed to the BJP’s ‘Udhiya Asmita’ campaign, helping it use Pandian’s non-Odia background and disproportionate influence, said political analyst SP Dash. This narrative may have struck a chord with voters who increasingly felt that the BJP was no longer run by its traditional political leadership, and Pandian became the focal point of a broader backlash against the party.
Political observer Rabi Das said Sujata Pandian could attract a section of anti-BJP voters who would have otherwise drifted towards the Congress. “Her entry may end up fragmenting the opposition space rather than uniting it. A stronger BJP and a renewed Congress competing for the same anti-BJP constituency would reduce the likelihood of a united opposition challenge.”
