From ‘Wonder Woman’ to ‘The Marvels’: 7 female superhero movies to watch before ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’
“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is set to hit theaters soon. The era of female superheroes on the big screen seems bigger and bolder than ever. From Gal Gadot’s iconic Wonder Woman to Brie Larson’s cosmic Captain Marvel, Hollywood has given us some truly powerful leading ladies. As the excitement builds, here’s a look at the seven best female superhero movies you can watch right now. You can stream them all on JioHotstar

2/8
“Wonder Woman” (2017)
Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Diana Prince remains the gold standard for female superhero films, following the Amazonian warrior as she steps into a man’s world during World War I and discovers the full weight of her power and purpose. Directed by Patty Jenkins, the film is emotionally rich and action-packed in a way that most superhero films only manage to achieve in their third act. It remains one of the best entries in the DC universe and is the perfect place to start your passion before Milly Alcock takes off.

3/8
“Captain Marvel” (2019)
Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, a Kree warrior who gradually discovers her past on Earth and emerges as one of the most powerful beings in the universe, all against a gorgeous backdrop of ’90s nostalgia. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film blends cosmic action with a confident origin story that never loses sight of the humanity that lies beneath all the power. If you haven’t revisited it recently, it will hold up better on rewatch.

4/8
“Black Widow” (2021)
Scarlett Johansson finally gets her own solo film after more than a decade as Natasha Romanoff in the MCU, as the film delves deep into her dark past and the Red Room program that made her the weapon she became. Directed by Cate Shortland, it’s a spy thriller dressed up as a superhero, with a family dynamic at its core that gives it an emotional heft that’s never been provided to the character before. It’s a long-awaited and very satisfying solo outing.

5/8
“Birds of Prey” (2020)
Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn in this chaotic, candy-colored revenge thriller that follows Harley’s life after her breakup with the Joker, as she teams up with a misfit squad to protect a young girl from an evil crime lord. Directed by Cathy Yan, the film is wild, funny, refreshing, and centers around women in a way that really sets it apart from anything else in the superhero genre. It’s unlike any superhero movie before it, and it’s all the better for it.

6/8
“Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022)
Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster picks up Mjolnir in Taika Waititi’s colorful and irreverent sequel, battling a terminal illness while facing off against the god-killing villain Gorr the God Butcher in a story that’s both funny and heartfelt. The film places the heroine firmly at the center of one of Marvel’s major films and gives Portman the kind of material she never got in previous Thor films. Christian Bale is terrifying as Gore, and the emotional blow Jane takes hits harder than most people expected.

7/8
“Supergirl” (1984)
The original big-screen Supergirl, played by Helen Slater, holds a special place in superhero history as the first major female-led comic book film, and follows Kara Zor-El as she travels to Earth to regain a powerful body and take on an evil sorceress in a fun and entertaining adventure. It’s unashamedly a product of its time, but it has real charm and a pioneering spirit that makes it essential viewing before Millie Alcock reimagines the character for a new generation. Without this film, the path to Woman of Tomorrow looks very different.

8/8
“Wonders” (2023)
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels brings Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau together in a fast-paced MCU outing built on the delightful conceit that the three heroes swap places every time they use their powers. Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris make an irresistible ensemble, and the film celebrates female leads with a vibrant, joyous energy that’s impossible not to get swept up in. It’s the most fun the MCU has had in years and the perfect final stop before Supergirl arrives.
