A US-based Indian-origin immigration lawyer faces a fine of more than $250,000 after federal authorities accused him of submitting false asylum documents on behalf of clients.Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has served five notices of intent to fine attorney Vinod Doddamani, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Tuesday. According to the agency, the procedure relates to 32 immigration cases in which 64 false documents were submitted.DHS alleges that Dodamani repeatedly submitted asylum claims that were “identical or nearly identical in language and content, and contained the same factual narrative or approximately the same supporting details relating to the alleged persecution.”The agency said the documents were submitted on behalf of Indian citizens. In a post on“Our message to immigration lawyers is clear: If you engage in fraud, you will be held accountable.”
According to US officials, this is the first time that the Department of Homeland Security has sought to impose financial sanctions on a lawyer accused of submitting fraudulent asylum applications.The move follows a directive issued last month by the department’s top lawyer directing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prosecute attorneys suspected of filing false asylum claims in immigration courts.“Fraudulent asylum claims threaten the safety of Americans by overwhelming our overburdened immigration system and delaying the removal of dangerous criminal aliens,” said Department of Homeland Security General Counsel James Percival.He added: “By constipation [Doddamani] “Take responsibility, we are sending a message to other immigration attorneys who engage in fraud across the country: the days of abusing and defrauding our immigration system are over.”Percival also posted on X: Last month, we put the open borders industrial complex on notice that fraudulent asylum claims will result in fines for lawyers. Today we fined a lawyer more than $255,000 for filing several fraudulent claims on behalf of Indian citizens.
So who is Vinod Doddamani?
According to the US Attorney. com, Dodamani was born in India and later became a German citizen. He has resided in South Florida since 2009 and describes himself as “internationally raised.”He has an extensive academic background and holds four degrees. He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and later completed law school at Chapman University. During his legal studies, he focused on intellectual property, entertainment, international law and immigration law.Doddamani is also multilingual and says he speaks ten languages, including German, French, Polish, Italian, Spanish and Hindi.He has worked as a patent, trademark, technology and immigration attorney. His resume indicates that he has represented clients before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), appeared in immigration courts throughout the United States and handled deportation and deportation cases.Before entering the world of law, Dodamani worked as an IT consultant and systems analyst in several major organizations.
His resume lists assignments with companies and organizations including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Credit Suisse, PIMCO, Capital Group, AEG and the Simon Wiesenthal Center.His legal career has also included work in patent law, trademark filings, and intellectual property matters. He is admitted to the bars of Illinois and the District of Columbia and has worked in both private law practice and intellectual property consulting.According to his Facebook profile, Vinod studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore, India. And he lives in Los Angeles, California.
