Calling her angry: Alex Cooper made her first substantive public comments regarding allegations that her company has a toxic workplace.
The popular broadcaster and media mogul on Wednesday commented on claims that Sick “fosters a toxic work environment.” Earlier this month, A Vanity gallery A report citing more than 40 sources alleged that Matt Kaplan — Cooper’s husband and unhealthy business partner — was verbally abusive to employees (who accused Kaplan of yelling and asking about their sex lives and making inappropriate comments about their physical appearance). Cooper was asked about the reports during a conversation with him The Wall Street Journal Advertising Editor Susan Franica at Cannes.
“I will say that building a startup comes with a lot of growth, and I’m very proud of what we’ve built at Unwell.” Call her father said the host. “And I’ll kind of leave it at ‘don’t believe everything you read on the internet’ – but I think everyone knows that at this point.”
Franica noted that the stories clearly indicated that “some employees feel a certain way” and insisted: “Do you think these allegations are just a statement?” [that’s] More about how the expectations of this generation of employees have changed? Or do you think you have a real problem?
“I think we’ve done a really great job at Unwell, and I think if you walk the halls, you’ll find a lot of people who are very happy to work at this company,” Cooper responded. “I think, unfortunately, being a woman in this industry is very difficult because you’re held to completely different standards. Whether it’s a smear campaign being created to tell someone’s narrative — whatever it may be.”
“I think when you read lies about yourself to fuel something else and it’s an obvious situation that’s going on, that’s tough. But I think the reason I’ve been successful in this industry is because I have really thick skin, and I’m just going to keep moving forward,” she concluded.
Cooper and Kaplan married in 2024, and announced in May that they were expecting their first child.
