Dutton Farm It was renewed for a second season on Wednesday. Now seven episodes into the nine-episode first season, the news comes as no surprise after its record-breaking debut.
but Yellowstone The spin-off was launched with great expectations from Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, who set out to continue the top TV franchise with both Dutton Farm and Yellowstone spin off Marshals (It airs on CBS, and has also been renewed for a second season.) These expectations have been passed on to stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who are now executive producers Dutton Farmwhen they spoke Hollywood Reporter At the beginning of the season.
“It was a serious decision, honestly,[to make]. [todoDutton Farm],” Riley said, while sitting next to her co-star during an interview in May. “It wasn’t something that any of us took lightly because we were so proud of it[[Yellowstone]And the world. They’re big shoes to fill – big shoes to fill. …I didn’t think there was anyone else better to navigate Beth than me, other than Taylor [Sheridan]. This is something I wanted to protect. Something that was very important to me.”
Below, during a pre-launch session, the flagship’s two stars spoke about the care taken Dutton Farm (the second Yellowstone Spinoff (not written by Sheridan) and their hopes of creating a new legacy, while also teasing the end of season one and addressing showrunner Chad Feehan’s exit as they look ahead to season two. “I’m not sure about that [Beth and Rip] “They’re about making peace, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting it,” Reilly says. “And that’s the drama.”

Behind the scenes, the two of you haven’t had much of a break Yellowstone End and start discussions on Dutton Farm. Have you ever stopped to think about Beth and Rip?
Cole Hauser Not real. Maybe a month for you [Kelly]? But you went to work.
Kelly Reilly Yes, I continued to host the show once I left the final season of the series Yellowstone. I went to North Wales and did another TV show[SkyDrama[SkydramaUnder the salt marsh]. Then we came back and were straight into pre-production for this. So, yeah, I didn’t feel that much of a break.
Hauser It felt fast. Also, when you’re part of the beginning, middle, and end of the show, but definitely the beginning, we were asked, “How do we create this new world? How do we tell it in a different way? How do we continue to keep the characters consistent, but take them to a new place where there are new challenges and new landscapes and new people to deal with?” So it was a lot. We put on the EP [executive producer] hat, but we took on the challenge and hope they all enjoy it.
I talked to you both towards the end YellowstoneAnd you said about the spin-off idea, “If Taylor writes it, we’ll go with it.” When she finally found out that Beth and Rip were alive YellowstoneWere you immediately talking about continuing?
Riley It was a serious decision, honestly. This was not something any of us took lightly because we were so proud of this show and the world. They’re big shoes to fill – big shoes to fill. Taylor’s words were everything to Beth, every line relayed to me was his. Are these characters conjured from his imagination, and he takes them without his words? It’s a challenge. But we know them. We have these elements in our DNA now, and in order to continue doing so, we had to take them to a different side of themselves.
For Beth, there was a corner to turn. The show wasn’t just literally changing locations [from Montana to Texas]but internally after the death of Beth’s father[JohnDuttonplayedbyKevinCostnerwaskilledin[JohnDuttonplayedbyKevinCostnerwaskilledoffinYellowstoneThe final season premiere]the question for me was, ‘How does this change someone?’ Shock and combat. Everything I did was to protect this legacy. So I was interested in the inner landscape of a woman who doesn’t know who she is now.
When I started YellowstoneNo one could have predicted its huge success. with Dutton Farmyou’ve come up with an IP address that you know is going to be a hit. Did you feel like you were in a place where you could ask for what you felt you deserve, and did that contribute to your rise as an EP?
Hauser I don’t think I would take it that way. I consider it more responsible. There are many hats you wear on set when you become an EP. It’s not just about taking care of me and taking care of us. She cares about the big picture.
Reilly Yes, the show has become something we really care about. Cast and crew.
Hauser We have great actors like Mark Menchaca, J.R. Villarreal, Ed Harris, and Annette Bening. These are all people who deserve to have their voices heard, and I think Kelly and I were really aware of the need to make sure people feel comfortable, because when they do, you get the best work out of them. That was the hat that I really wanted to wear and make sure everyone felt that way [comfortable]. This is all new to us too. We want them to come in and feel like they have a successful creative voice.
Riley This is something I wanted to protect. Something that was really important to me. I didn’t think there was anyone else better suited to navigate Beth than me, other than Taylor. I know her well. If you ask me any question about it, I will have the answer. It was something I really felt [strongly about]. I didn’t want anyone to take the easy way out with her, or Rip; To take clichés and run with them. I wanted to elevate it, take it seriously, and always try to find the truth.
Hauser I was really good at throwing things, Christina [Alexandra Voros, director/EP].
Riley Taylor Sheridan is still our executive producer, so we were able to make a fresh start and move forward with it.

Was the first season an eight-month shoot?
Hauser Yes. When you put on your EP hat, you say goodbye to your weekends and start bleeding into that Monday. We were up to the challenge. In the end we’ll see what everyone thinks.
I imagine it wasn’t easy for Taylor to let go of Beth – I know she’s one of his favorite characters to write.
Riley I know she was one of his favorite characters he ever created. I really think Taylor used Beth as his voice. Certainly there were some things and the ways in which she saw the world and how she dealt with things…there was a lot of richness to her. I love playing her so much.
How difficult it was to decide on the right hook to set off Beth and Rip’s pacifism Yellowstone End to start this series? And it was Dutton Farm The story of the fire ignited by the Los Angeles fires in 2025?
Hauser There are a lot of fires here in Montana. Every year we filmed there, there was always a fire.
Riley We will close. Smoke too – all the time, we could see the helicopters in the frame. It’s part of their life there.
Hauser What is the best way to burn it to the ground other than fire? What Beth caught in the house, the clothes she wore, how we got our horses and our son.
Riley A picture of my father. That’s it. That’s all they have.
They had five minutes of swinging peacefully on the porch.
Hauser We were in the middle of filming when we returned to Montana to do it [premiere] scene, and she and I needed a big breath of fresh air. We got it.
Riley I’m not sure these characters are out for peace, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting it. And there is drama.
Are you hoping or planning for this to be a multi-season show? I read five seasons somewhere.
Riley We didn’t hear five. I think we take it one season at a time.
Hauser This was a monster. We didn’t even have any time to think about it either. We literally filmed until the end of March and were on the road to sell out the show.
Riley I think we have some ideas for Season 2, where we left off Season 1. We can’t talk about the ending, but we’re very excited about where it’s going, so we already know where it starts and that’s exciting.
If you have another Yellowstone Hit on your hands, would you like to do that for several Seasons?
Riley If the writing is good. You never want to stick to this career too tightly, do you? Honestly, we’re so grateful to be here and if we have the opportunity to continue making something we’re proud of, then we’re here. If not, we’re both working actors and we’ll be fine.
Hauser It would be cool, though. I always feel like if the audience keeps talking the way they’ve been talking about the show for the last 10 years or so, I’d love to keep entertaining them.
There’s a poignant conversation between your characters at the beginning of the film Dutton Farm About John Dutton. I entered with Yellowstone audience, but it also attracted new viewers. How do you walk this line with the tendency to Yellowstone History as you go?
Riley It’s impossible not to use that as a resource, and it’s impossible for us not to talk about what happened. And actually, I probably would like us to talk about it a little bit more on the show, but they don’t have the time. Life comes at them and there are new characters and new situations. And before we know it, we’re in this new iteration. This new story. But the beautiful thing for me is that the audience is with us, if they watch it for six years, they know everything about these characters and what their history is. They meet new characters that you know nothing about. I think this is kind of fun.
Hauser But my favorite part is when we stop and let the characters breathe a little bit, like the couch scene you’re talking about. For us, including Kelly, it’s a breathtaking moment. It serves as a short reprieve for the characters to acknowledge what they are going through. I think the great thing about them is that if bullets fly or places burn up, somehow or other they find a place for each other. It’s something we always talk about throughout the season: Where are those moments?
Riley Losing her father, John Dutton. We saw how much she loved him. It had to be close to my skin the entire time I was making this.

Showrunner Chad Feehan exited the show after the first season. It was reportedly mutual. Was that difficult when setting the tone, and are you ready to change for season two?
Hauser Models change all the time. This work is about adaptation. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things are changing. People are moving forward.
Riley We don’t have season 2 yet. We’re done [season one] With Chad beautifully. We finished this season together. It was a really challenging but really satisfying show. And it was Yellowstone. Is anything worth making? We are all creative minds and we all work together and I am very proud of that. But if we get a second season, we won’t make those decisions.[[Author’s Note: This interview took place in May, before the Season 2 renewal.]
Spencer Hodnut and Luke Grimes want a Dutton Farm–Marshals Cross. Would it be fun to go visit each other? Yellowstone spin off?
Hauser I like it. Luke is one of our closest friends and like a brother to me.
Riley Yes, I would love for Beth to meet Casey [Dutton, her brother]. I love an episode like that. That would be really special.
Hauser I’d like to see Rip and Casey get along for a change. A little peace.
Riley That would be nice. I think we should take a road trip to Montana.
