The BMW convertible, which was traveling at a high speed of 251 kilometers per hour with the hood open, was completely destroyed in the accident.

According to initial reports, the driver lost control of the speeding car, which led to a violent collision on the highway divider. Due to the high speed of the collision, the car was completely destroyed, and the remains of the victims were scattered within a radius of half a kilometer.

The deceased were identified as Yogesh Kishan Negi (24) and Rebecca Babu Jacob (22), while the injured passenger was identified as Angad Gill (26). Jill and Niji are residents of Badlapur, while Rebecca is from Bandra. Gill was seriously injured and was admitted to the ICU at Fortis Hospital in Kalyan. The friends were on a night out to celebrate Yogesh Negi’s 24th birthday on Sunday.

According to police sources, the incident took place around 2 am near Irangad in Badlapur. The car was heading towards Badlapur from the Titwala side when the driver lost control of it. Due to the high speed, the driver apparently failed to assess the road condition in the dark, which led to the accident. The car violently collided with a highway barrier and overturned several times. A video has since gone viral on social media, allegedly recorded inside the car moments before the accident, showing the speedometer tracking at a fatal speed of 251 kilometers per hour.

“We have sent the bodies of the deceased to the government hospital in Ulhasnagar for post-mortem examination. Since the car was a convertible with an open bonnet, the occupants were ejected from it on impact, causing fatal injuries. We still do not know who was driving the car at the time of the accident. Since the family members are in no condition to speak currently, we are waiting to record their statements,” Kishore Shinde, senior police inspector of Badlapur West police station, told HT.

Shinde also added that since the stretch of road is yet to be completed, it has not been officially opened to the public. Police are now investigating how the youths managed to reach the closed highway and where they entered the road from.
