An Indian man with an EAD green card asks if he can return to India with a fund of Rs 6 crore and no job.
There is no consensus on the exact amount of money in your bank account that would allow you to take a break from work. An Indian man in the US recently took to Reddit to ask if he could survive on Rs 6 crore in India without a job.
The man explained his status as an EAD, which means he has applied for his green card and has a work permit.“I’ve been affected by layoffs in the tech space recently. I’m on GC EAD with a financial runway of about 5 months. Given the current job market, I’m trying to plan for the worst-case scenario: moving back to India,” the Redditor said.He pointed out two main problems in moving to India: the first is his house, which he does not want to sell at a loss, and the second is that his children do not know any Indian language and therefore they will face a big problem if they move to India.“Has anyone moved their kids to middle school in India without language skills? And is it worth spending 5 months trying to find a role in the US at EAD, or should I start preparing for the move now? Can I survive on a salary of 6 Crores in India without any job?” Reddit asked.Unlike H-1Bs who have 60 days in the US after they lose their jobs, green card EADs have no window. They can remain in the United States as long as their I-485 is pending, has not been denied, and they continue to meet the requirements for their green card category.
Opinions were divided in the responses as many feel returning to India with a fund of Rs 6 crore and no immediate job would not be an issue, but another section felt that the Redditor still has enough time in the US to look for another job. It would also not be a good idea to leave the green card waiting list. However, social media users agreed on one point that Rs 6 lakh crore would be enough in India.“6 crores with no debt? You’ll be fine. That’s a lot more than most families in India retire with. Honestly, the biggest issue here doesn’t look like money. It looks like uprooting two kids right before middle school and figuring out the house situation. Maybe I’ll use those five months and keep looking. You’re on EAD, which takes away one headache that employers usually have. There’s no reason to rush into moving if you don’t have to.”
Children also adapt faster than we give them credit for. Many CBSE schools have children who barely know Hindi, especially in big cities. “I won’t stress that part too much,” one responded.
