Twitter reviews for ‘Toy Story 5’: Fans praise Jessie taking lead but debate whether sequel is necessary

“Toy Story 5” sparked a wave of early reactions on Twitter (now X), with viewers describing the Disney and Pixar sequel as funny, emotional and more focused than “Toy Story 4.” The response was not entirely one-sided.

Many praised the larger role of Jesse, the return of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and the film’s story about children and technology.

Others said the sequel replicates the emotional beats the franchise has already used.

‘Toy Story 5’ X review: Fans react to Jessie’s story and technology

“Toy Story 5” comes from Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Andrew Stanton, Kenna Harris co-directed, and Lindsay Collins produced it. The voice cast includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, Tony Hale, Craig Robinson, Annie Potts, and Keanu Reeves.

The story follows Bonnie’s toys after Woody’s exit in “Toy Story 4”. Jessie leads the room while Buzz supports her.

Bonnie becomes attached to a frog-like tablet called the Lilypad, pushing the games into a story about childhood, screens, and changing toys. One viewer wrote: “ToyStory5 is definitely a lot better than the 4th movie because of what worked in this movie. But the 5th movie doesn’t come close to the first three because of what didn’t work in this movie.”

Another reaction read: “You go to see a Toy Story movie knowing it won’t disappoint and ‘ToyStory5’ is no different. The writing is always relevant, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack all give great performances and it’s funny and emotional. The first 3, probably the greatest trilogy ever, but make 10, I’ll watch it.”

‘Toy Story 5’ Reactions: Viewers describe the sequel as funny and emotional

“For someone who thought Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the series, I have to say I respect that it still resonates and has something to say,” one viewer said.

Toy Story 5 hits all the right notes with humor and heart, along with kids who really need to connect with other kids.Another called the film “a step up from its predecessor” and added, “This is definitely a Jessie-focused movie, and she carries it well. Jessie and Buzz shippers will be happy about that.”One post said, “ToyStory5 was fun. Necessary? No. But it was great to see the gang. I realized I prefer Jesse over Woody.”

The film may be more appreciated by younger viewers. I will continue to watch it as long as it maintains the quality. Not my favorite but still with the vision.

“Toy Story 5 was never going to make me emotional like this. My inner child is not feeling well,” another viewer wrote. The same reaction added: “It hits straight at childhood. It balances nostalgia with a true story and delivers some real emotional moments.”One post called the film “another knockout for the franchise” and praised the “characters new and old, and how it blends the storylines.”Another reaction read: “I thoroughly enjoyed ToyStory5, I laughed a lot, even a few tears. I loved hearing those flourishes in the soundtrack, Randy Newman is truly one of the greats. Glad to see Jessie taking the lead and being the main character this time.”

More mixed responses said: “I thought ToyStory5 was quite good. The toy vs. technology story was a great, insightful idea for the centerpiece of the film, but it’s wrapped up in a bunch of set pieces and emotional beats that we’ve seen in this series before. I feel more than ever that this franchise should have ended at 3.”
