Jim Carrey is in talks to return for the sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Ron Howard to direct

Jim Carrey will soon return to screens in another ‘Grinchmas’ movie with reports that the actor is set to reprise his famous role as The Grinch.

Jim Carrey returns as The Grinch

More than 25 years after winning hearts with How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Carrey is reportedly in talks with Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment to develop a sequel to the beloved 2000 film.

Along with the actor, Ron Howard, who directed the original live-action film, is also expected to return to direct the sequel and will produce alongside his old partner at Imagine Entertainment, Brian Grazer, according to a report on The Hollywood Reporter.

The untitled project will reportedly have a screenplay by comedy writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schiffer, and David Mandel. The trio previously collaborated on the 2003 Dr. Seuss film adaptation of The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers. Plot details for the sequel are still under wraps, and a release date has not been announced.

About “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was released just before Thanksgiving in 2000, and was a box office hit, grossing over $260 million domestically. The film became the highest-grossing film in North America that year, collecting US$345 million worldwide. It also won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

Along with its theatrical release, the film has, according to Nielsen’s streaming data, ranked among the top 10 most broadcast holiday films in each of the past five years.

Last year, Carrie’s live-action version bested the 2018 animated film adaptation, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, on the airplay charts.

It remains to be seen whether Curry will sign on the dotted line. The actor previously shared his experience shooting the film and the grueling makeup routine that made him want to leave the project. However, it has recently been suggested that advances in motion capture technology could provide a less stressful way to bring a character to life.

The plot of “Clone” Jim Carrey

Recently, Carey’s different appearance sparked an online frenzy, with the Internet starting a “clone” conspiracy. The claim that the actor had been cloned emerged after he made a rare public appearance at the 2026 Cesar Awards in Paris, where fans speculated about his noticeably different physical appearance and demeanor. After a huge uproar on social media, Jim’s representatives and event organizers denied the reports and confirmed that it was the real Jim Carrey who attended and accepted the award.
