NEET student dies by suicide in Dehradun; Parents say ‘college overachievers’ showed no signs of depression

A 23-year-old NEET student committed suicide at her home in Dehradun, Uttarakhand on Tuesday morning (June 16) due to “dissatisfaction with her excellence in her studies”. The aspirant showed no previous signs of depression or behavioral change to indicate such a drastic step, according to a police official.

College was excellent

Police say the victim lived in Chandrapani area of ​​Dehradun and was preparing for the NEET retake exam. The report said that the victim obtained a grade of 96.7% in the twelfth grade and later became a top student in college.

“Yesterday morning, a tragic incident took place. A report was received at Patel Nagar police station that a 23-year-old girl had committed suicide in Chandrabani,” Circle Officer (CO) Sadar Ankit Kandari revealed to news agency ANI.

Her parents found her dead in the room

Police said the incident unfolded around 10:30 am, when her mother was calling her for breakfast. When she did not open the door, the mother called her father. When he opened the door, he found that she had hanged herself.

A suicide note obtained from the site contained the phrase “Mom and Dad, I love you” as well as statements expressing her dissatisfaction with her lack of success in her further studies.

“In the note, the woman expressed her affection for her father and said that no one could be blamed for her death, and attributed the decision to her perceived incompetence,” Al-Kandari said, adding that frustration over the lack of success in her studies seemed to be the main reason behind the extreme step.

No telltale signs

According to the parents, there were no indications in the lead-up to the event that their daughter was considering such a drastic step.

Al-Kandari added: “With regard to the parents, they said that the girl went with them to the ‘Jagran’ (religious vigil) that night.” “Because she was studying late at night, she was up late in the morning. This was a normal routine, and no concerning facts emerged regarding changes in her routine or behavior.”

“She lived with her parents and siblings. As for the reason, she left a suicide note in which she wrote only four or five lines titled ‘I love you’ and ‘I’m sorry’. In addition, after speaking with her parents and neighbors, no such factor has emerged yet about the reason for her suicide.”

He further revealed that according to the data collected from the victim’s parents, the people with whom she spent most of her time, she was usually busy studying and preparing for her upcoming exam. “But there was no worrying factor such as her staying alone at home, being silent or isolated, or becoming completely depressed. Her parents said that there were no such extreme behavioral changes that could be identified as a reason for taking such a drastic step,” he added.

The incident is the latest in a spate of suicides across the country by NEET aspirants who are struggling with their mental health in view of the paper leak and re-test now scheduled by the government.

The NEET re-test is scheduled to be conducted on June 21 from 2 pm to 5:15 pm. The Center has taken extensive measures this time to avoid paper leakage.
