US Vice President J.D. Vance outlined a three-point framework at the heart of the proposed peace deal between Washington and Tehran, stressing that Iran must give up nuclear weapons, keep the Strait of Hormuz open, and meet strict conditions before gaining any economic benefits.Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said: “The deal is actually very simple. First, Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon. Second, the Strait of Hormuz is open. And third, there are all these benefits that the Iranians could get if they act.”His statements come as the United States and Iran are close to signing a peace agreement in Switzerland on Friday.Vance said any economic assistance to Tehran would depend on significant changes in its behavior, including ending support for armed groups and abandoning efforts to rebuild its nuclear program.“If they stop developing terrorism, if they stop financing terrorism, if they stop supporting the rebuilding of the nuclear weapons program, they can actually get some real benefits. If they don’t do any of those things, they won’t get anything,” he said. The Vice President also criticized what he described as attempts by Iranian officials to distort the proposed agreement.“Iranian propaganda is there [are] “Well, we get all these things, and they ignore the fact that they don’t get these things unless they fundamentally transform themselves as a country,” Vance said.
According to Vance, the United States will benefit regardless of how Tehran responds to the agreement. He added: “The United States wins in both cases, as the president said. Either they will get nothing, we destroy their nuclear program and open the Strait of Hormuz, or they radically change themselves and that is a big win as well. It is really up to them.”The US Vice President said that Iran will effectively enter a testing phase under the proposed arrangement, where Washington will judge Tehran based on its actions and not its commitments.“The thing I learned from the president of the United States is that whether he’s a friend or an enemy, you shouldn’t trust anyone, you should trust people’s actions,” Vance said.He added: “That’s why the way this agreement is structured is that if they act in the right way, if they act in this way, they will get a lot of benefits.”US President Donald Trump promoted the proposed deal in a post on Truth Social, calling it a “great deal” aimed at bringing stability across the region. The US President wrote: “This great agreement will bring peace and security to the entire region. Many presidents have tried to make peace with Iran, and all of them failed before me. The leaders of the region have found, for the first time, a president who can help them achieve true peace.”Meanwhile, G7 leaders welcomed the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran during their summit in France.
