Balanced India will rely on openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to provide a strong start against Pakistan when they begin their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign at the ICC on Sunday.India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, are aiming to add a second world title after winning the Women’s ODI World Cup last year.
The head-to-head record is strongly in India’s favour, with India leading Pakistan 13-3 in women’s T20Is.The two teams last met in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai, where India registered a six-wicket win.
Despite never winning the Women’s T20 World Cup, India have been among the most consistent teams in the history of the tournament and have reached the knockout stages on multiple occasions.

However, New Zealand defeated them by 52 runs at Trent Bridge to end their campaign.England won the tournament, beating New Zealand by six wickets in the final.2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in West IndiesIndia started with a 10-run defeat to New Zealand after managing 129/8 at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts.
They recovered with a nine-wicket win over Pakistan chasing 106, with Poonam Raut scoring an unbeaten 54. This was followed by another win over Sri Lanka, with Sulakshana Naik and Mithali Raj both scoring fifties.India reached the semi-finals but lost to Australia by seven wickets at Gros Islet in Saint Lucia.Australia won the 2010 World Cup, beating New Zealand by three runs in the final.ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2012 in Sri LankaMithali Raj captained the tournament in Sri Lanka.

Their only victory came against hosts Sri Lanka, where they chased down 102 in 14.4 overs.Australia retained the title, beating England by four runs in the final.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2014 in BangladeshIndia entered the tournament under pressure after the 2012 campaign.They lost their opening match to Sri Lanka by 22 runs in Sylhet and then suffered another defeat to England.India registered a 79-run win over hosts Bangladesh, with Harmanpreet Kaur scoring 77 runs. Victories over the West Indies and Pakistan followed, including a successful 106-run defense against Pakistan.However, India were still looking for sustained success against teams from South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia. However, they lost to Pakistan via DLS in Delhi.England beat India by two wickets in a low-scoring contest, with West Indies also defeating them in Mohali. India’s group stage campaign has come to an end.The West Indies went on to win the tournament, beating Australia by eight wickets in the final at Eden Gardens.ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2018 in West IndiesHarmanpreet Kaur took over as captain and made an immediate impact, scoring 103 off 51 balls against New Zealand at Providence Stadium in Guyana. This was India’s first century in the Women’s T20 World Cup.India then defeated Pakistan and Ireland to qualify for the semi-finals. They also beat three-time defending champions Australia by 48 points to complete the group stage unbeaten.However, England stopped India in the semi-finals in Antigua.Australia later beat England by eight wickets in the final.ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in AustraliaIndia opened the tournament with a 17-run defeat to Australia but recovered with victories over Bangladesh, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.The abandoned semi-final against England helped India qualify for its first Women’s T20 World Cup final.In front of over 86,000 spectators at the MCG, India lost the final to Australia by 85 runs as Australia claimed their fifth title.Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South AfricaIndia started with a seven-wicket win over Pakistan at Newlands, with Jemima Rodriguez scoring an unbeaten 53 off 38 balls.They followed this up with a six-wicket win over West Indies, with Deepti Sharma taking 3/15.
