As Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu completes two years in office on Friday, the coalition government under his leadership is still struggling to overcome challenges in reviving the state’s economy while implementing the welfare agenda.

The coalition government comprising the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janasena Party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a historic victory, winning 164 of the 175 Assembly seats and 21 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, reducing the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) led by former Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to just 11 Assembly seats and four Lok Sabha seats. Sabha.
As the alliance celebrated its second anniversary, the Prime Minister claimed to have achieved economic recovery, expanded infrastructure and technology-driven governance, and said the government had taken the country from “destruction” to a path of “development”.
“We are constantly working to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people, with welfare, development and good governance as our goals. The coalition government is striving for the welfare of ‘every section’, including farmers, women, youth, employees and workers,” Naidu said in a post on X.
On the other hand, the opposition YSRCP launched statewide protests under the slogan “Two Years of Backstabbing”, alleging that Naidu had failed to fulfill his election promises even after completing two years in office.
“The coalition government deceived people from all sections of society by abandoning its commitments after coming to power,” Jagan alleged.
Economic revitalization and investment boost
The main focus of the Naidu administration was to restore investor confidence and position Andhra Pradesh as a preferred investment destination. An official statement on Tuesday said that the state attracted investments worth $23 lakh crore in the last two years in sectors including electronics, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, data centres, manufacturing and logistics, which will create 2.3 million jobs.
She said that within two years, 800 companies showed interest in investing in the southern state. “The slogan ‘Andhra Pradesh is back’ is resonating across the country, even though 25.3% of the total FDI in the country is trapped by the southern state,” the official statement said.
Among the notable investments announced during this period was Google’s proposed US$15 billion AI data center in Visakhapatnam, which is considered one of the largest technology investments ever proposed in the state. Electronics giant LG Electronics has also accelerated its plans to $5000 crore manufacturing facility in Surrey. Likewise, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel’s new steel plant, the foundation of which was broken in Anakapalli last month, is expected to be the largest of its kind in the country.
The government also claimed to have recorded a gross state domestic product (GSDP) growth rate of 11.28% during the second quarter, which is above the national average.
The government also obtained a financial package exceeding $Rs 10,300 crore to revive Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and facilitate approvals for major projects like BPCL refinery and industrial corridors.
Amaravati returns to center stage
Perhaps the most visible achievement claimed by the Naidu government is the revival of Amaravati as a state capital project. After years of uncertainty, the capital construction work gained momentum after the Center gave it legal status by passing a bill in Parliament declaring Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The World Bank issued US$207 million for development capital, while German bank KfW agreed to provide an amount $Loan of 5000 Crores. HUDCO approved $11,000 crore and the Center has provided grants worth Rs 11,000 crore $1,560 Crores. The state government has adopted self-financing and development models to speed up the construction process.
Naidu has set a three-year target to complete major government infrastructure in the capital. However, his ambitious plan to implement the second phase of the land pooling scheme covering 16,666 acres across seven villages, faced resistance from sections of farmers and criticism from the YSRCP, which demanded justice for landowners who participated in the first phase.
Amaravati is also a key component of Naidu’s vision to transform Andhra Pradesh into a global technology hub. The proposed Quantum Valley project aims to create one of the world’s leading quantum computing ecosystems in the metropolitan area.
Besides Amaravati, the government has focused on much-awaited infrastructure projects across the state.
The Polavaram irrigation project, another major priority of the administration, has seen renewed momentum. The government aims to complete the first phase by 2027, and considers the project critical for irrigation, drinking water supply and power generation.
The alliance has also completed the Bhogapuram International Airport project and taken up several national highways, ring roads and proposed metro rail systems. Union government support has played an important role in funding these initiatives.
The Prime Minister declared 2026 as the “Year of Technology-Driven Decision-Making” and revived the Real-Time Governance (RTG) system for monitoring public projects and services. AI is being integrated into grievance redressal systems, agricultural services and governance monitoring.
The management has also launched future projects such as Drone City in Kurnool and Quantum Valley ecosystem in Amaravati as part of the broader digital transformation strategy.
Well-being agenda
While the government pursues industrial growth, it has simultaneously expanded social welfare programs under the “Super Six” framework. The NTR Bharosa pension scheme remains one of the largest social security initiatives in the state, benefiting about 6.3 million pensioners.
Last year, the government launched the Talliki Vandanam scheme, under which financial assistance is provided to $15,000 is provided annually to families of school-going children. more than $An amount of Rs 10,000 crore has reportedly been credited to the beneficiaries, covering over 6.7 million students.
The welfare of farmers has been addressed through Annadata Sukhibhava programme $Rs 6,310 crore has been transferred directly to around 4.6 million farmers. Under the Deepam-2 programme, women get three free LPG cylinders annually.
The revival of Anna Canteens was another major social welfare initiative. More than 200 canteens have reopened across the state to provide millions of subsidized meals. Additional social welfare measures include assistance to fishermen and motorists, honorarium grants to religious officials, and support schemes for lawyers and other professional groups.
The Naidu administration launched one of the largest teacher recruitment drives in the history of the state through Mega DSC, resulting in filling up of nearly 16,000 vacant posts. However, the program has raised allegations of irregularities from the YSRCP.
Political analyst Ramu Soravagola said Naidu’s claims about the implementation of his welfare schemes do not reflect reality, as people are largely disappointed.
“It seems that the four sections – farmers, youth, women and employees – that decide the electoral fate of any political party are unhappy with Naidu’s broken promises. This was evident during my interaction with these sections in the last two months,” Soravagula said.
For example, the government promised to provide two million jobs but has not been able to provide even 20% of them so far, he claimed. “How many unemployed youth received a monthly allowance of? $3000 until the job is secured? he asked.
He said people still believe that Naidu will fulfill at least 50% of his poll promises by the end of the term.
The alliance remains Stable
The political stability of the coalition was strengthened thanks to the complementary roles played by its three partners. Jana Sena chief and deputy chief Pawan Kalyan has focused on governance and rural development initiatives, especially village infrastructure, roads and water supply projects.
Although the Jana Sena became less visible at the political level than it had been during the election campaign, it sought to build its organizational structure and management credentials.
Within the TDP, Naidu increasingly promoted his son and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, appointing him as the party’s working president, signaling a gradual leadership transition. Lokesh emerged as a key figure in both governance and party organisation.
Although the BJP did not make significant electoral gains in the state, it expanded its organizational reach under its new leadership of the state and continued to capitalize on its coalition role.
The alliance has also benefited from its strong relationship with the NDA government at the Centre, enabling Andhra Pradesh to secure significant financial assistance and project approvals.
