IMPHAL: After six bodies were recovered in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, Chief Minister Y Kemchand Singh said the state government will not remain a silent spectator to the atrocities, according to an official statement issued late on Wednesday.

The bodies are suspected to be those of six people from the Naga community who were kidnapped from Lilon Phifei village in Kangbukpi district on May 13.
After nearly 24 hours of sustained search operations involving around 450 personnel of Manipur Police, CRPF and Assam Rifles, with the help of sniffer dogs and forensic teams, the remains of the six persons were recovered on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.
“The deceased is believed to be among the hostages taken hostage from Lilon Fife on May 13, 2026,” they added.
The bodies appeared a day after the release of 14 Kuki members who were kidnapped by armed groups in Manipur’s Senapati district about a month ago.
Singh expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and strongly condemned this barbaric act.
He stressed that the government will not tolerate such violence and will not remain a silent spectator to these atrocities. He added that the perpetrators responsible for the murder will be arrested and punished in accordance with the law.
According to the statement, the state government has handed over the investigation into the kidnapping of the six Naga villagers to the National Investigation Agency.
The bodies of the six men were taken to the JNIMS mortuary in Imphal around 2 am, where tensions prevailed after a large number of people gathered to protest the killing.
Security forces had to resort to firing tear gas bombs to disperse the demonstrators who caused minor damage to hospital property.
The United Naga Council, the apex body of the Nagas in Manipur, condemned the killings and demanded that the Kuki National Front chief’s group be “declared a terrorist organisation” for its alleged involvement in the heinous act.
The body also demanded the cancellation of the agreement to suspend operations with the Kuki militants and the immediate dismissal of Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nimsha Kipgen, alleging that Kipgen is the wife of Thangboe Kipgen, the KNF-P chief.
