The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is set to host an event celebrating the opening of its new exhibit focusing on Chinese fashion.

The Los Angeles Foundation has teamed up with Timid magazine, which focuses on Asian talent in entertainment and culture, to celebrate its latest exhibition, Chinese Women’s Fashion: Empire to Modernity, at the museum.

The new exhibit will feature mannequin heads designed in collaboration with Jason Wu, according to the release, and will open on June 14. The exhibition Chinese Women’s Fashion: Empire to Modernity is the first exhibition of its kind at LACMA. Covering the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 through the rise of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the exhibition examines how fashion became a powerful tool for identity expression and resistance during a period of social and political change in the country.

Chinese Women’s Fashion: Empire to Modernity “Traces a century of transformation through more than 70 remarkable collections from Shanghai, Hong Kong and America,” the event description reads. “It charts the evolution of Chinese women’s clothing, from the loose embroidered robes of the late Qing Dynasty to the elegant silhouettes of the qipao of the 1930s and the world-famous cheongsam of the 1960s. The vibrant colors, luxurious silks and intricate embellishments showcase the fine craftsmanship that is the hallmark of these garments.”

The description continues: “Viewed on mannequins designed by fashion designer Jason Wu, the works in the exhibition present a rarely seen story of how Chinese and Chinese American women express their identity, navigate change, and shape their lives through clothing.”

The opening night event aims to bring together leading Asian creatives and emerging voices across multiple industries including fashion, entertainment and culture. It aims to highlight LACMA and Timid’s shared commitment to “amplifying Asian narratives and promoting intergenerational cultural dialogue,” according to the statement.

The exhibition Chinese Women’s Fashion: Empire to Modernity runs from June 14 to October 12 at LACMA.
