Gracie Abrams was “worried that feeling secure” in her relationship with Paul Mescal would threaten her “motivation to write music.”

Grammy nominee applique cover Vogue magazine on Tuesday where she discussed her upcoming album Daughter from hell. Some of Abrams’ most successful songs, such as “It’s So True” and “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” are considered for their somber lyrics, especially regarding relationships.

In profile, Vogue magazine She explained that “in her relationship with Mescal, [Abrams] “She was speaking more openly and communicating in a healthier way,” she told the outlet that she wasn’t sure how having a “safe and stable” relationship would impact her music.

“I was worried that the feeling of security and stability was threatening my motivation to write music,” she said. “You scared me.”

Her lead collaborator and producer Aaron Dessner taught her that “it’s okay to dig deeper and improve on what you naturally tend to do, even if it looks less shiny and new on the outside.” Elsewhere, Abrams thought about spending time with Mescal in London while filming Hamnet.

“It’s like every day you come home and read the greatest book of all time — that’s what it means to be in conversation with someone who makes something like this,” Abrams said, adding that it was “magical” for Mescal to work alongside Chloe Zhao and Jessie Buckley. “The person you love will be surrounded by witches,” she said, praising the two women.

The pair have been dating for nearly two years, having been spotted together for the first time in London in June 2024. Most recently, Abrams and Mescal recently attended a private screening of Paul McCartney’s new documentary project, where Mescal will play the Beatles musician in the upcoming Sam Mendes film.
