Run-A-Muck, a media startup, works on short stories.
The company, co-founded by Condé Nast alum Pamela Drucker Mann, is set to launch ad-supported short stories about culture and fashion, Substack, DraftingAccording to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
The move comes alongside the company’s bet that the material could be the next major source of intellectual property for films, television, podcasts and other multimedia projects. They plan to adapt successful works across multiple platforms.
“Instead of starting with the medium and researching the audience, we start with the story we want to tell and then determine the format that best serves that story,” Drucker Mann said. Wall Street Journal.
Many prominent writers have already signed up to publish on the platform. They include Cody Behan — writer of the short story “The Decorator,” which is set to be adapted for Netflix — and Abbott ElementaryWriter and director Brittany Nichols.
However, adaptation is not the entire goal of the push toward shorter novels. Some stories published on the platform will remain in this format. “Not everything we create is destined to become a TV series or feature film,” added Drucker Mann.
DraftingRun-A-Muck’s seven-month-old Substack publication attracts more than 50,000 readers a month.
