Meghan Markle has responded to the backlash surrounding her decision to share photos of her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, on social media. The Duchess and Prince Harry regularly share glimpses of their family life while keeping their children’s faces completely hidden from the public, a practice that has drawn some scrutiny given Meghan’s outspoken call for stronger global protections for children online.
Her spokesperson has now addressed the controversy head-on, explaining the reasons behind the couple’s approach.
What Meghan Markle’s spokesperson said
“The Duchess has always been clear that there is a difference between sharing moments from her life and exposing her children to public scrutiny,” her spokesperson told Newsweek. “By obscuring their faces, it demonstrates the same principle it stands for: giving children privacy, power and protection in an increasingly digital world.”
“Far from being contradictory, hiding their faces actually reflects the message I delivered in Geneva: that parents can choose to share their family experiences while still taking intentional steps to protect identities, privacy and digital footprints,” the spokesperson continued.
Why was the issue of hypocrisy raised?
The statement comes after a wave of questions about whether Meghan’s approach to social media conflicts with her public messaging. Just last month, the Duchess addressed the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, about the harmful effects social media can have on children. The timing of her constant social media posts featuring her children, even with faces obscured, has led some to question the consistency of her stance.
Earlier, in October last year, Meghan also spoke about the issue during an appearance at the Healthy Minds Project’s World Mental Health Day festival in New York City. “Thankfully, our kids are still too young for social media, but we know that day is coming,” she said. “Like many parents, we are constantly thinking about how to take advantage of the benefits of technology while protecting against its risks. The hopeful intention of separating quickly becomes impossible.”
The spokesperson’s response makes clear that Meghan views her current approach not as a contradiction, but as practical evidence of the very values she has been championing publicly.
