The actor was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his charitable work and commitment to supporting youth communities.

The royal family is sharing photos from the investiture on its Instagram account, showing King Charles tapping a sword on Idris Elba’s shoulders as he kneels to receive the knighthood honour. “Congratulations to everyone who was honored at today’s investiture ceremony, hosted by The King at Windsor Castle. Sir Idris Elba for his services to young people,” the royal family commented on the carousel.

The star reposted the story on his Instagram account while expressing his gratitude to the royal family for the honor of knighthood. “We are grateful. The work continues,” Elba wrote on another photo showing him wearing his medal and holding the hand of his wife, Sabrina Elba, on the castle grounds. The star tagged Sabrina’s Instagram handles and the Elba Hope Foundation, the charity the couple co-founded in 2022 to support diaspora communities and create greater opportunities.

Idris Elba’s charitable work earned him a knighthood

Elba serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust and has attributed his start in the arts to a grant he received from the Royal Charity when he was 18 years old. A knighthood has been announced in King Charles’s 2026 New Year’s Honors list, and the moment becomes official at the investiture.Speaking to the outlet at the “Hijack” Season 2 premiere in January, Elba said the recognition continues, calling it a “true honor” for his work to be recognized.

“I haven’t really talked about it, but I will say it’s a real honor to be recognized for this work. Especially trying to make as much noise for young people and the things that some of them are going through. So it feels like an honor. And my family is honored.”

“I don’t even know how to talk about it,” Elba shared.

Idris Elba and King Charles recently collaborated, surprisingly, at a garden party at Buckingham Palace in London on May 14. The pair jump behind the DJ booth together at the event, which celebrates the King’s Trust’s 50th anniversary. King Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince William officiate exclusively at investiture ceremonies, distributing knighthoods, knighthoods, and other honors after the lists of honorees are announced twice a year.
