A 29-year-old spiritual guru has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura on charges of raping, drugging and blackmailing women. The Indian Institute of Technology graduate-turned-teacher lured women with promises of career prospects and guidance, before abusing them, police said on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accused Abhishek Mishra, also known as Adhikarta Narayan Das, was arrested on Monday from his ashram residence in Radha Kund.

“The arrested 29-year-old accused from Bhubaneswar in Odisha, Abhishek Mishra, called himself Adhikarta Naren Das. He passed away from IIT Roorkee (2017-2021 batch) in 2021 but took up religious preaching online and moved to Radha Kund in Goverdhan area of ​​Mathura three years ago,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mathura Suresh Chandra said. The police official added that the self-proclaimed guru drugs the youth, brainwashes them and detains them inside his ashram-like residence.

Police arrested Mishra on Monday after a woman from Chhattisgarh filed a rape complaint against him on May 25.

“The accused trapped a girl from Chhattisgarh and brainwashed her through his preachings and had physical relations with her. The victim girl lodged a rape complaint against the accused on May 25 at Gurdhan police station. In this regard, the accused was arrested on Monday,” said Anil Kumar Singh, deputy inspector of police, Gurdhan circle in Mathura.

The woman alleged that Mishra offered her milk on the pretext of ‘prasad’. She added that the milk contained an intoxicating substance that made her lose consciousness.

According to news agency PTI, the complaint added that she lost consciousness after drinking milk and was allegedly raped, after which he recorded obscene pictures and videos of her.

The accused also threatened the victim and demanded her $Including 5 thousand, warning her that he would publish her videos if she failed to pay.

The police added that two young women and a man were rescued from the building and handed over to their families.
