A 35-year-old man, arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl, was shot in a police vehicle in Kamrup Metro area when he tried to snatch a service weapon from a police officer and escape, Assam Police said on Monday.

The suspect, Akkas Ali (35 years old), was later transferred to a government hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) Kamrup Metro District, Daisy Gogoi, said that the suspect is accused of raping the minor girl about 15 days ago. But the sexual assault came to light on Sunday when the girl was taken to the doctor after she complained of pain.
Gogoi said she spoke about the sexual assault with the doctor.
A case has been registered under Sections 65(2) (rape committed against a child below 12 years of age) and 74 (use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 6 (penetrative sexual assault of a minor) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012, and Section 75 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012. Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 (Child Abuse).
Akkas Ali tried to escape, but was arrested from a house in a nearby area where he was hiding. “The area comes under Chaigaon police station, but we brought him to Palasbari PS because people were protesting, especially because the victim and the accused belong to two different religious groups,” a police officer said.
“For legal proceedings, he had to be taken to Chaigaon, but when he was taken at around 1:30 am, he attacked the police… He managed to snatch a service weapon from an official and started issuing threats inside the moving vehicle. At some point, our team opened fire on him. He was later shifted to a government hospital,” she said.
The police said that the girl was transferred to a government shelter on Sunday after medical examinations were conducted on her, and her statements were recorded.
