IPL 2026: How every piece of the puzzle is falling into place for Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Seventeen years have taught Royal Challengers Bengaluru how to survive. One title taught them how to win.“Usually win. Unfortunately, so is the loss” Vince Lombardi once said his famous phrase.

For the longest time, the Central Bank of Congo seemed trapped in the latest cycle. Season after season, they have carried the hopes of one of the most passionate fan bases in the ISL, but have fallen short. That wait finally ended in 2025, and by successfully defending their title in 2026, RCB doubled their IPL trophy tally within two seasons and became only the third franchise after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to retain the IPL title.

Rajat Patidar joined the elite captain’s club alongside MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, as RCB completed a turnaround that few could have imagined during the franchise’s down years. For nearly two decades, RCB has been defined by stars. Virat Kohli was the main focus and still is. Before and alongside him there were icons like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle. However, the unlikely catalyst behind the franchise’s golden era is Patidar, the lowly skipper from Madhya Pradesh who now has two IPL titles to his name and has overseen the most successful period in the franchise’s history.

IPL 2026 Final: RCB win

Most importantly, the 2026 edition proved that winning the 2025 edition was not a coincidence. It was just the beginning. After years of searching for the right combination, the RCB think tank of Mo Popat, Andy Flower and Dinesh Karthik have assembled a team that does not rely on one individual carrying the load. The old RCB often relied on individual intelligence. There have been seasons powered by Gayle’s destruction, campaigns saved by de Villiers and years when Kohli shouldered almost the entire batting responsibility.

Still leading from the front in 2026, Kohli finished as the top run-scorer in the series once again, but this time he got support. Lots of it.The march to a second successive title came to a fitting end at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the stadium where RCB broke its curse a year ago.Winning the title is difficult. Defending one is a completely different challenge. But RCB was ready for it. They finished top of the points table with nine wins in 14 league matches, beating Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 and then repeating the feat in the final against the same opposition.

Quiet boss, aggressive team

At the heart of this transformation stood the Patidars.

Rajat Patidar

Rajat Patidar

When he took over the team, the challenge extended beyond tactics. However, over the past two seasons, Patidar has quietly shaped the team in his own image: calm off the field, aggressive once the competition gets underway. The captain also led from the front with the bat, finishing the season with 501 runs at an average of 41.75 and a strike rate of 192.69. His 42 sixes were among the highest in the tournament. When RCB faltered against Rajasthan Royals, Patidar rebuilt before accelerating to 63. At Wankhede, he smashed 53 off just 20 balls. Against Lucknow Super Giants, his 61 almost dragged RCB into an unlikely chase. Then came Qualifier 1, where he produced the innings of the season, making 93 off just 33 deliveries with nine sixes to effectively settle the contest before the Gujarat Titans began their pursuit. However, even in a team that has evolved beyond relying on individuals, Kohli has remained its foundation.

Virat Kohli: He is still the standard bearer

At the age of 37, Kohli once again topped the RCB run charts, scoring 657 runs at an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 165.49, with one century and five half-centuries. His unbeaten 105th goal against Kolkata Knight Riders silenced any doubts after back-to-back ducks. His 81 was against Gujarat Titans in a chase of 206 pure overs. His unbeaten run of 69 in the season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad ensured that RCB’s title defense began with a complete victory.

And when he arrived on the biggest stage, Kohli once again found a way to make his mark. The man who spent nearly two decades carrying the franchise’s hopes produced his fastest fifty in the IPL in the final (75*), starting the chase that sealed RCB’s second successive title.

Different heroes, same result

Josh Hazlewood also became the perfect character

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

With the ball, Devdutt Padikkal emerged as the perfect partner for Kohli and Patidar in the batting unit.Padikkal returned to Bengaluru last season after enduring difficult spells elsewhere, but IPL 2026 marked his true renaissance. He finished with 464 runs at a strike rate of 168.72 and consistently supplied the aggression. His 61 off 26 balls against SRH turned a grueling chase of 202 into a comfortable one. His fifty against CSK laid the platform for RCB’s massive total of 250. Against GT, he scored a crucial 55 runs off 27 deliveries. The depth of the batting did not end there.Tim David

His role was clear from the start: to finish games. His 305 runs came at a strike rate of 189.44. The standout performance arrived against CSK, when he made an unbeaten 70 off just 25 deliveries. Throughout the season, David delivered impactful innings that repeatedly tipped matches in RCB’s favour.

At his side stood Krunal Pandya, one of the most valuable players in the tournament.

Krunal scored 226 runs at an average of 37.66 while scoring 145.80 and also took 14 wickets. His contributions often arrived at moments of crisis. His 73 against Mumbai Indians in a dramatic last-ball win in Raipur was as impressive a performance as any during the season.Phil Salt’s season was curtailed by injury, but his impact when he was available was tremendous. In just six innings, he scored 202 runs at a strike rate of 168.33 and provided explosive debuts that helped establish RCB’s aggressive identity early in the tournament. Not to forget Venkatesh Iyer, who warmed the bench for most of the IPL 2026 matches before being pressed into action when both Bethell and Salt were unavailable and provided impetus to bat in the qualifiers. His 73* off 40 at No. 4 against PBKS was the best. If batting provides the firepower, bowling provides the control that ultimately separates RCB from the rest of the field.

Bhuvi, Hazlewood and RCB’s new formula

For years, RCB’s batting has attracted most of the attention while questions remain about their attack.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar changed that. The veteran seamer finished with 28 wickets at an average of 17.89 – just one shy of the Purple Cap – and an economy rate of less than eight.

His spell against DC, where he and Hazlewood reduced the opposition to 8 for 6, was among the most devastating new-ball performances of the season. Against MI, he delivered another match-winning spell. Time and again, Bhuvneshwar gave RCB early control, allowing the rest of the attack to operate from positions of strength.

At 36, he looked like the leader of a championship bowling unit.Hazlewood’s numbers were modest by his lofty standards – 15 wickets from 13 matches – but his impact was enormous. The Australian relentlessly hit difficult lengths, creating pressure and repeatedly forcing the batsmen into errors. Then there was Rasik Salam. The young fast bowler has emerged as one of the revelations of the season, picking up 19 wickets in just 12 matches.

Having been reliable in the tough stages of the innings, Raseed repaid that faith with breakthroughs in key moments and completed a fast-paced attack that combined experience with youthful energy – and his three-pointer in the final was testament to that.

Even when Hazlewood missed games early in the tournament, Jacob Duffy stepped in seamlessly and scored during the final as well.Taken individually, those performances were memorable victories.

Viewed collectively, they tell a bigger story. Each major win featured a different champion. Sometimes it was Kohli. Sometimes a Patidar. Sometimes padikal. Sometimes David. Sometimes Krunal. Sometimes Bhuvneshwar. Sometimes the bowlers would act as a collective unit. That was the hallmark of this team in the tournament.

Each major win featured a different champion. Sometimes it was Kohli. Sometimes a Patidar. Sometimes padikal. Sometimes David. Sometimes Krunal. Sometimes Bhuvneshwar. Sometimes the bowlers would act as a collective unit. That was the hallmark of this team in the tournament. The first IPL trophy ended one of the longest waits in the league. The second emphasized something more important. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are no longer a franchise chasing history. Maybe they’re on their way to creating one.
