Liverpool parted ways with manager Arne Slott after a disappointing 2025-26 season, ending the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield after just one season in leading the club to Premier League glory. The decision was confirmed by Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, which described the move as difficult but insisted it was necessary to help the club progress after a frustrating title defense that ended in fifth place.Slott arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 as Jurgen Klopp’s successor and was an instant success. In his first season, he led the Reds to a 20th Premier League title, equaling the all-time record and allaying fears about life after Klopp. However, expectations were much higher heading into the next season. Liverpool have backed Slott heavily in the transfer market, spending $570 million to bolster the squad. Notable arrivals, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremy Frimpong and Alexander Isak, have failed to produce consistent performances, while injuries have further complicated matters throughout the season. The club also had to deal with the tragic death of Portuguese international Diogo Jota last summer, an event that cast a pall over the season.

In a statement, Liverpool’s owners explained the reasons behind the decision.“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary so that the club can continue to move forward.“Again, it must be emphasized that this decision was not reached lightly, at all.”Despite the dismissal, Liverpool praised Slott’s achievements and contribution during his time at the club.“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC during his time with us has been significant, meaningful and, most of all for the fans and ourselves – successful.“As such, our appreciation for all he has achieved could not be greater, especially since he was backed by a work ethic, diligence and level of experience that further confirmed our view that he is a pioneer in his field.”Liverpool also confirmed that the search for Slott’s replacement has already begun as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing season and re-establish itself among the leading teams in English and European football.
