Medical miracle or MAGA marvel? Trump's doc says his heart is like someone 14 years younger

TOI correspondent from Washington: The White House late Friday released a three-page medical note declaring that US President Donald Trump, who will turn 80 on June 14 and is the oldest person ever to be sworn into the Oval Office, has “excellent” cognitive and physical performance and is fully fit to continue as commander-in-chief.The timing of the release, just before 11pm on Friday, ensured that America’s political class was already halfway through drinks, dinner or a pass before the nation learned that its president apparently had the biological vitality of a much younger man.The headline was the assessment that Trump’s cardiovascular system resembles that of someone 14 years younger than his chronological age, a claim immediately embraced by supporters and met with great astonishment by critics who spent months circulating close-up photos of swollen ankles, bruised hands, and an occasionally unsteady gait.According to Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, Trump’s physician, the president underwent extensive testing at Walter Reed Medical Center, including heart, lung, neurological and cognitive exams, lab work and consultations with 22 specialists from multiple academic institutions. The verdict was emphatic: cardiac function was normal, mental state was normal, there were no signs of depression or anxiety, and general physical health was strong enough to withstand the demands of the presidency.

However, buried among the glowing reviews was language more familiar to ordinary mortals. The report noted “slight swelling in the lower leg,” although it was an improvement over last year. She confirmed that bruises continued to appear on the back of Trump’s hands, attributing this to repeated handshakes and taking aspirin. The president also takes the cholesterol-lowering drugs rosuvastatin and ezetimibe, and has been advised to increase physical activity, lose weight, and improve his diet. The recommendations raised immediate questions: If the patient was already a marvel of presidential physiology, why would he be told to exercise more and eat better? Trump currently weighs 238 pounds, up 14 pounds from the 2025 exam. For perspective, this puts him closer to the size of an American football midfielder, dimensions that have sparked a lot of joy.The report’s description of Trump’s “regular physical activity” also drew chuckles from skeptics familiar with the president’s argument that the human body has a finite battery of energy that should not be unnecessarily depleted.

However, he does have one health trait that doctors routinely praise: he is a non-smoker and a teetotaler. However, for Trump’s most loyal supporters, the report only confirms what they already believe: He is not so much a 79-year-old politician as a force of nature, a political Superman powered by cheeseburgers, Diet Coke, and discontent. However, critics point to his swollen ankles, periodic discoloration of his hands, his highly publicized diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency, episodes in which Trump appears drowsy at public events, and recent photographs showing makeup covering bruises.

Some commentators have gone further, speculating about sleep disorders, cognitive decline, or other undisclosed conditions. These claims remain largely speculative, as the medical report found no neurological abnormalities and specifically states that Trump demonstrated a normal mental state and excellent cognitive performance.Cognitive testing itself has become a recurring obsession for Trump.

For many years, he proudly recounted passing screening tests such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, often describing it as if he had passed a doctoral exam rather than a test designed to detect cognitive impairment.Trump’s comic book usually features his famous ability to remember a series of words and recognize common animals. In MAGA folklore, a successful duck president may soon be ranked alongside the moon landing and defeat of the Soviet Union.

Medical experts point out that the test is a screening tool, not an intelligence test; Passing it is reassuring, but it is not evidence of superior intelligence. However, the latest report leaves Americans with two competing pictures. One depicts a remarkably active president and his heart allegedly belongs to a man in his mid-sixties. The other sees an almost 80-year-old, overweight person with circulatory problems, and his every bruise becomes a national guessing game. Either way, Trump’s annual medical exam remains the only medical exam in America whose results are hotly debated with the Supreme Court ruling.
