The H-1B Redditor says he hasn’t heard back even after applying for over 1,500 jobs.
A Reddit post went viral by a person who claimed to be an H-1B visa holder, where he said he applied to over 1,500 jobs across the US over the past few months and did not receive even a single call from any recruiter.
The Redditor gave his background that he is not new, has an H-1B visa, and has been working for over three years as a data engineer in Ohio. But his current company decided not to renew his H-1B application, which is why he’s looking for work.“I have hands-on industry experience building pipelines, working with cloud technologies, ETL workflows, and production systems. Unfortunately, my current company decided not to renew H1B applications, forcing me to actively look for new opportunities,” the Redditor wrote.“What’s been mentally exhausting is the complete silence despite applying everywhere across the country. At this point, I don’t really know if it’s about the market, my location, visa sponsorship concerns, or something else entirely,” the Redditor wrote asking for help from the community. This post went viral for several reasons at a time when the Donald Trump administration was taking steps to stop H-1B and fraud in the occupied Palestinian territories.
But most of the reactions were angry, which prompted him to return home. The overall impression was that three years of experience is not a good field to be in, and neither is data engineering. Many people commented that the situation is very clear: a temporary worker on a temporary visa is no longer needed in the United States and must return to their home country.A section of commentators expressed shock that H-1B visa holders who are believed to be highly skilled are not getting jobs in the country. “Not even a single call – it means your skills are worthless and no one is interested in your experience. You want a job in data, good luck with thousands of unemployed candidates in the market. Better pack your bags and go home before your savings runs out,” one person wrote.
