In a letter to Shah, he said the issue of illegal immigrants was “extremely fragile and dangerous” for internal security and sovereignty of the country, and requested the Centre’s intervention to implement inner line permit for those coming from outside the state.

He added, “Illegal aliens enter the country, taking advantage of the weak administration and direct and indirect assistance from political leaders and dishonest officials.”

Debbarma claimed that most of the illegal immigrants went to several states and created trouble there after entering India through the international border in Tripura.

“Some illegal immigrants work for their livelihood, but some are involved in terrorist activities,” the TMP lawmaker claimed.

Debbarma alleged that infiltrators are changing the demographics of the neighboring country, creating unemployment and land-related problems, and indulging in cross-border crimes.

“It is very unfortunate that no government mechanism in the north-eastern state has worked on such a sensitive issue of illegal immigrants. I have written to the Center and the state government to implement the inner line clearance in the bordering state to check infiltration, but no action has been taken yet,” the legislator said.

He praised the Center’s formation of a higher committee specialized in the infiltration issue, describing it as “a timely step to maintain law, order and internal security.”

Debbarma also sought to meet the Union Home Minister during his proposed visit to the state on June 5.

“Please allow me specific time in Agartala on June 5 to make an oral representation with relevant documents on this serious issue of illegal immigrants so that the National Register of Citizens, Inner Line Permit, Special Intensive Review of Electoral Rolls and Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 can be implemented in the state to secure the borders,” he added.
