The votes of the 102 civic bodies in Punjab were cast on Tuesday through ballot papers in which more than 7,500 candidates participated. The elections are seen as a semi-final for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) looks to challenge the state’s overall electoral history and retain power.

Punjab civic body poll results: AAP shines, Congress and SAD catch up

  • AAP shines: The ruling AAP is shining in the Punjab civic polls so far, with the party winning 178 constituencies across the state so far, taking the lead. The tally includes a clean sweep in Raya Nagar panchayat in Amritsar, 9 of 15 wards in Kartarpur in Jalandhar. The party is also leading from various places in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur and other areas.
  • Congress, SAD play catch-up: Congress ranks second by a large margin in the results announced so far, winning 58 wards. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is close behind in third place with 53 wins so far, according to PTC News.
  • Congress leadership in Kapurthala: The Congress leads in Kapurthala Municipal Corporation and also leads in Tanda Urmur in Hoshiarpur district.
  • SAD is in front of you in a few places: He also captured several wards in different cities in the party’s stronghold of Bathinda while also leading from Samaralia in Ludhiana.
  • BJP is nowhere to be seen: The BJP has won only seven districts across Punjab, according to the results announced so far. The party pledged to run alone in the upcoming House of Representatives elections in the state, but the current results, if they hold, will constitute a major shock to the aspirations of the saffron party in Punjab.
  • More than 7,500 candidates are competing: 7,554 competing candidates participated in the electoral process in all urban local bodies. According to election officials, the Aam Aadmi Party fielded 1,801 candidates, while the Congress Party fielded 1,550 candidates. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 1,316 candidates in the fray, while the Shiromani Akali Dal has fielded 1,251 candidates for the civic body elections.
  • Good voter turnout: Punjab witnessed an overall voter turnout of 63.94 per cent in the 2026 municipal general elections held on Tuesday, according to the official polling day summary released by the state election authorities.

A total of 22,38,241 votes were cast in 102 municipalities, including municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The elections covered 1,897 wards and 3,833 polling stations across the state. Among all the categories, Nagar Panchayats recorded the highest voter turnout at 76.18 per cent, followed by Municipal Corporations at 65.06 per cent. Municipal bodies recorded a turnout of 59.91 percent.
