Director-actor RJ Balaji spoke about the journey of his blockbuster film ‘Karuppu’ and revealed how actor Thalapathy Vijay and his Kannada hit song ‘Kantara’ played a major role in shaping the film.
In a recent interview, Balaji shared that ‘Karuppu’ was initially supposed to be Vijay’s last film before he entered politics.
Although the project later moved to Syria, Balaji said that his discussions with Vijay helped improve the script significantly and gave the film a stronger emotional core.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, RJ Balaji said, “I narrated Karuppu to Vijay sir. This was supposed to be his last film before politics. This was supposed to be his last film before politics.”
But there were certain factors, including his political commitments and his decision regarding his latest film. He asked me: Can I call you in a week and confirm? Then he called me and explained the reasons. I felt that these reasons were completely fair, and I told him, “I completely respect your decision.”
Thank you very much.” He also added: “I told him a couple of stories because he himself asked me if I had scripts for him. This in itself was a great respect for my work.
Balaji also revealed that Vijay’s detailed questions after the narration helped him rewrite and improve the script.
How ‘Kantara’ changed the peak of ‘Karuppu’
RJ Balaji also shared how ‘Kantara’ inspired the climax of ‘Karuppu’. “After the Singam scene, there was another scene planned. But I wasn’t satisfied with the climax. It felt right. Then I watched the morning show of ‘Kantara’. For the last 10 minutes, people in the theater were literally in a state of ecstasy.”
“I was deeply inspired by that experience,” he said. Since Karuppu was about God Karuppasamy, Balaji felt that the film needed a stronger spiritual and emotional ending.
“That was the moment when the idea for the climax came to mind,” he explained, adding that the energy and influence of “Kantara” led him to rethink the final parts of the film.
From Vijay to Syria, Karuppu’s unexpected journey
RJ Balaji said that the project eventually reached Suriya after the producers learned that he had narrated the story to Vijay.
“They asked me if I could narrate the same scenario to Mr. Suriya,” he recalls. The film later became one of the biggest Tamil films of the year. According to Balaji, Vijay’s comments and the emotional impact of ‘Kantara’ played an important role in making ‘Karuppu’ what it is today.
