A 32-year-old man died due to electrocution on Tuesday after heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms lashed various parts of Tripura in the last 48 hours, damaging at least 61 houses, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Subhash Sarkar, a resident of Sadar in West Tripura district, according to reports from the government’s Emergency Operations Centre. The report added that a total of 61 homes were damaged in different areas of the state, including two homes with complete damage, 18 with serious damage, and 41 with partial damage.

Light to moderate rain is expected in parts of the state during the next 24 hours, according to meteorological forecasts, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour, with heavy rains ranging between 7 and 11 cm falling in isolated places in the districts of West Tripura, North, Unakoti, Dalai, Sibhijala and Khwai.

Last month, the state received an average rainfall of 133.9 mm between April 27 and 29. Three places – Kamalpur in Dhalai district (283 mm of rainfall), Beshramganj in Sipahigala district (278 mm of rainfall) and Khwai in Khwai district (230 mm of rainfall) – recorded the highest rainfall. Continuous rains accompanied by thunderstorms led to the death of one person, the injury of two, and the displacement of up to 243 families during that period. A total of 4,191 homes and 659 school buildings were damaged due to the rain.

So far, the state has provided financial assistance amounting to: $66,445 thousand.
