Mouni Roy’s journey from TV to films

In a conversation with Brut, Mouni Roy spoke about her career, saying that it took 9 years to transition from television to films. “I’m so hungry for work,” she said.Mouni has become a household name on television with shows like “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”, “Devon Ke Dev… Mahadev” and “Naagin”. She later moved into films and worked in projects like ‘Gold’, ‘Made in China’, ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘The Bhootnii’.The actress also spoke about how people judged her during different stages of her career. She said, “I have been typecast since the beginning of my career. When I did Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, people said the girl next door can’t play a glamorous role. When I did some reality shows, reality dance shows, they said I was too glamorous. When I did Sati, they said I was too Indian. When I did Naagin, it was ‘She can only do fantasy shows or mythological shows.’

“This is something I’ve always dealt with, and it doesn’t really bother me.”

Mooney said such labels no longer define her choices. “It doesn’t matter whether you call me charming, elegant, or something else — it’s like saying she’s good for a certain type of role,” she said. She added, “When I played Brahmāstra or Bhootnii, they said she is good for these roles… not larger-than-life roles, but more exotic roles. She can play these roles well.”

As long as – whether it’s magic, whether it’s kinky, whether it’s the girl next door, whether it’s dancing – if you see me giving it 100%, and it resonates with the audience, then that’s what I tap into.”On the work front, Mouni is currently seen in the film ‘Salakaar’. The show also stars Naveen Kasturia, Asrar Khan, Janhavi Hardas, Mukesh Rishi, and Kuldeep Sareen. She will next be seen in David Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, co-starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur.
