The West Bengal government has revised the Bakrid holiday schedule and declared May 28 as a public holiday for Eid al-Azha after updating the moon sighting announcements. The decision replaces the previously notified dates and aligns the state’s holiday calendar with the revised national observance of the Islamic holiday, bringing about changes in government offices and institutions.
The West Bengal government has revised the Bakrid holiday schedule and declared May 28, 2026 as the public holiday for Eid al-Azha across the state. The decision was taken after updated information confirmed that the festival will now be celebrated on May 28 instead of the previously announced dates.A new notification issued by the state government said that the previous holidays declared on May 26 and 27 have been withdrawn. Both days will now operate as normal working days for offices, institutions and establishments covered by the government notification.
A new notification has been issued following the revised festival date
The previous order, issued in November 2025, declared May 26 a holiday for the day before Zoha Day and May 27 for Bakrid celebrations, the state administration said.
However, a revised moon sighting update changed the expected festival date, prompting the government to change the holiday calendar. In the latest order, the Governor approved that May 28, which falls on a Thursday, be considered a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, regarding the holiday of Od Zoha (Bakred). The government said the amendment was necessary to ensure that the official holiday coincided with the actual day for practicing religious rituals.
Previous holidays have been cancelled
The notification clearly stated that the previously announced holidays for May 26 and 27 have been cancelled. As a result, notified government departments, educational institutions and other institutions will remain operational on both days. The revised announcement is expected to impact administrative schedules across departments, especially in schools, public offices and institutions that have already prepared for the previous holiday dates.Officials said updated instructions will be sent to all relevant departments to avoid confusion among employees and the public.
Organizations announce schedule changes
In light of this review, some organizations are committed to making announcements regarding their new schedule regarding examinations, attendance and other work-related matters. Other financial institutions that follow a list of public holidays may also do the same. This clarification will help organizations understand that there will be only one public holiday to celebrate this important festival. With the release of this revised holiday list, May 28 will be declared the only public holiday for Bakrid in West Bengal in 2026.
